"Zachariah," Virtue stated, for what must've been the thousandth time. "Your name is Zachariah."

He hummed a noncommittal sound, withholding a grimace at the darkness that flashed across his sister's face. But only for a moment.

'Your name is Zachariah. I am your sister. You are my brother.' Such were the truths Virtue told him. Again and again, begging, pleading for an answer in return. For a memory.

But he had none to give.

He remembered the day of his awakening, of blood and agony, of storm and death. He remembered what they called him: abomination, monster. Was it so wrong of him to fight, when they struck first? Did that truly make him evil?

Virtue said he was noble, before. He died for something good. But what use was that to him now. What use was nobility to the dead?

Still, she was his sister. He was her brother. His name was Zachariah.

He heaved a sigh, lightning sizzling under his skin.

If only he could remember the rest.

The forest was dark and ancient, and Zachariah found solace there.

There were no eyes to watch him, no whispered words at his back. There was peace, and silence. And so he walked in it.

The dais was several hours from the forest's edge. He had come upon it once before, the monument of stone surrounded by water, but he still did not understand it. And so he returned, and sat upon its smooth surface, warmed as if by some invisible fire, and wondered.

But this time he was not alone. He cocked his head in the direction of the other being, hidden by trees, and a delighted laugh echoed across the stream.

"You are more keen than most, child of the storm," a voice crowed, dry as the rustling leaves.

Zachariah peered into the half-darkness, unnerved that his watcher should know even that much of him.

"Would you like to remember?" the voice asked, a whisper on a gust of wind.

He pondered this a moment. A trick, perhaps? "At what cost?" he replied, then started at his own voice, clear of the ash and dust that burned his lungs. "How...?"

The voice purred, ignoring his confusion, "What do you have to offer?"

Zachariah knew, at once, that there were forces far greater than he at play here. But that did not ebb his curiosity, nor his awe.

"I have power," he said, with tongue like quicksilver. Sparks flew at his next breath, the vice around his magic begging release.

A dragon flitted from the shadows, eyes glowing gold, fangs bared in a sly grin. They nodded.

"They accept."

They would bring him back;
they promised they'd bring him back.

But as what?

Run swiftly, little rabbit.
The hounds are always chasing you.

FAMILIAR

Firebug, little firebug, so swiftly dashing here and there, floating on a breeze.

But what does it see?

What does he know?
