Deep within the Shaded Grove, where the trees are at their thickest, lies the ruins of an ancient temple built to worship a god from long before the time of dragons. Within these hallowed halls lurks the undisputed leader of the Grove - Inkwell. Born alone and raised by Nature itself, Inkwell is a staunch defender of everything his element stands for, and will lay down his life should it mean the survival of the Gladekeeper and all she has created.

Hatchlinghood
naturemidsmall.png
Early in the Winter, as the air began to chill but before the first snow, a lone egg was left in the wood, concealed by a sturdy bush. The hatchling that emerged some days later found himself utterly alone in a vast expanse of untamed wilds. Knowing nothing of what life was supposed to be, yet still feeling like something was missing, he took his first wobbling steps towards trying to find some sense of purpose or belonging.

As he roamed, the hatchling found himself guided away from deep rivers and steep hills by the thick branches of the trees rising tall above him. Having no context for anything being out of the ordinary, he did not realize it was quite rare for one to see tree branches moving with such speed and purpose, growing longer and thicker before his eyes. As he turned from the places he was unable to go to, the branches receded back into the canopy.

When the hatchling grew hungry, he did not find himself wanting for long; the plants rustling at his paws were delicious and came up from the ground easily, and the bushes would rustle from time to time, releasing a steady stream of evacuating insects. The hatchling quickly learned how to stalk and capture the larger bugs; all the while, the flora around him responded to his needs, guiding him every step of the way.

He was a quiet child. The forest had taught him the values of silence, and he made nary a sound as he grew more swift and cunning with each passing day. Thus, when an unfamiliar dragon stumbled into the brush, they very nearly missed him entirely. Almost - but not quite.

Immediately upon seeing the hatchling, the dragon almost seemed to panic. They made strange sounds and motions he did not understand. He knew, in some deep part of himself, that they were like him; and yet, clear as day, they were so very different. He tried to escape back into the trees. They chased after him on much longer, more experienced legs, and grabbed hold of his nape.

He had never flown before.

Into the sky they went, and he still made no sound even as terror gripped his heart. Where were they going? Why did the forest not save him? What was this great expanse of nothingness above the canopy?

On the horizon, back the way they had come, rose the great Behemoth. As the stranger took him farther and farther from its enormous trunk, he reached out to it, and somewhere in his soul felt it reach back.
