Biography
Born the son of the clan's ambassador, Nicolas knew he was special- his father was powerful, strong, known throughout the world from his travels and workings. His mother was a beautiful mystery- she hadn't stayed with the clan long, just long enough to see him and his sisters hatch before leaving to serve the Arcanist. He had only just been a hatchling when she had left them behind with their father, her wings carrying her away to serve their god.
With parents like these, Nicolas knew he had to be just as great, worthy of his parent's name in his lineage.
For months, he was lost. All he could do was laze around the clan, feeding from the stores, taking advantage of the fact that children of the clan were safe from the auction house, unlike the other hatchlings that came and went on a daily basis. Feeding and caring for his familiar was the only thing that brought him joy- nothing else. He didn't know why, couldn't understand why his purpose was so hidden, but for some reason it was.
He watched his first sister fall in love with music, his second sister fall in love with the arts, but he found nothing. Nothing that called to him, no passion that made life worth living. He had nothing.
Until, one day, in an attempt to help him find a calling, his father took him to the Coliseum.
He hated it at first, hated the death his father dealt before him, hated the creatures left dead behind him. Hated that so many of his meals came from this fight, this fight that no one else seemed to care about.
He hated it, but loved it at the same time. The thrill of the fight, the feeling of getting stronger, becoming better at fighting then any other creature who faced him. It was a beautiful feeling, fighting.
But the feeling he loved the most was when a creature survived, when the creature, weak, injured, opened its eyes to find it was free of the Shade and wanted to return home with him.
He came to love the familiars, more then he even knew he could. He loved taking care of them, watching the flourish under his watchful gaze, slowly coming to love him and his clan as much as he loved them. He loved it more then the fight, and so it was for that reason he continued to fight.
Because if he fought, he could bring more familiars home to care for and tend, more familiars he could love and that loved him, and he wanted nothing more then to find them all.
Eventually, he came fully into his own- he could no longer grow any stronger, could no longer serve his clan, and he knew it. He knew that it was time for him to leave his clan, to find a new one he could serve, and despite the fact that he would have to leave his beloved familiars behind, still, he was excited.
Because a new clan was a whole new set of familiars to love, and he had more then enough to go around.
