"KOKYTOS (or Cocytus), the river of wailing, was one of the five rivers of the underworld and its god. The others were the Styx, Akheron, Pyriphlegethon and Lethe."

Cocytus is associated with the process of mourning, including funeral dirges and lamentation. The river Cocytus is said to bring extreme grief and tears to whoever drinks from it, and the river itself is always described as "sluggish".
