There’s a buzzing at the base of Olum’s skull. It’s low, but Olum can hear it rattle along his spinal cord when his thoughts are quiet and the lights are dim.

The first time Caieta threads her magic through his temples to check on him, it gets ever so slightly louder. He yelps, and Caieta immediately retracts her claws in surprise. She refuses to try again, and sends Olum off with a sleeping draught and a puzzled frown.

Not long after, Olum starts coming apart at the seams. His scales fall away to reveal a sticky black nothing, and it’s all Caieta can do to keep him from melting away entirely. Her furious, desperate patch job glints gold against his inky body, and Olum knows then and there that he is overflowing.

He just wishes that he could tell whether he’s the vessel or the deluge.
