Biography
LAIDON - Smuggler
To read Laidon requires either an enormous amount of empathy or a degree in mind-reading. Otherwise, it's nigh on impossible.
He's always been a careful dragon. Care is the name of the game in his trade, after all. A single slipped word, an ounce of emotion, and the local authorities could have him arrested in the blink of an eye. He's learned to deal in secrets and silence, all his words breathed only at the right times, only to trusted ears. Such is the nature of smuggling.
It's hard to remember when he began carrying contraband across the borders. He was young, that much is certain, and he was reckless, judging by the number of high risk, high reward jobs he tried to take on. His father taught him the basics, allowing him to sit in on negotiations so long as he kept quiet and really, truly listened, and after that, he was on his own in the big wide world that frowned on everything he did.
Breaking out from the pack was no easy task, not when his rival fences were well-established and more than just unhappy about sharing their territory with a kid. The first hurdle to smuggling anything at all was to either move through neutral territory, which was usually crawling with the law, or push someone else out of their own lands, setting up stolen shop there. But Laidon was clever, and with a little time and a lot of threats, he settled himself in the Moon Siren Coven, with clear routes in and out of the Shifting Expanse.
Business with the coven is a breeze. It helps that he's the high priestess's mate; with Verona's permission (and the approval of her goddess), he could probably do anything he pleases. It's just a matter of not offending the deity the coven believes in, which is mostly a matter of not admitting he doesn't believe, and all is well. From there, traveling to the Shifting Expanse is a piece of cake as long as he brings another coven member with him; few residents of the Tangled Wood are keen on challenging passing religious fanatics. Meanwhile, no one in the Stormcatcher's domain seems to care much for religion, and to the bursting population of Ridgebacks, smuggling is a lot more like borrowing, to Laidon's delight.
Recently, though, he's dialed back on his activity. He maintains his cold, even abrasive posture, of course; that's too ingrained to be let go at this point. But he seeks out fewer and fewer items to spirit over the borders, and looks for more and more time to spend with Verona. Maybe he doesn't believe in the Moon Siren, but he's come to love her and all her oddities, and he worries for her health when the religious fervor sweeps her up again. She needs him more than he needs fencing, and by now, he's made his peace with that.
