Falcon hatches to an isolated clan living on the northern tip of the Southern Icefield. On clear days the warped crystalline mountains of Arcane are visible on the horizon. He's named for the birds that hunt off the nearby cliffs, who dive at breathtaking speed to catch their prey. The idea is that hopefully he'll become as focused and adept as them.

He does. Probably not how any of them intended or preferred, but he does.

It starts on a cold midwinter night, when a star falls from the sky. Falcon is instantly enamored, and no matter how much the elders try to tell him that meteor showers are not only a thing, they are a predictable, mundane thing, it's no use. He's smitten, and there is no convincing him otherwise. He wants to touch the stars, now that he knows they move.

The elders tell him to ignore such notions. Maybe he would've, if the mountains of Arcane weren't on the horizon. There are stories, you see. The Arcanist watches the stars - and sometimes the stars come down to Sornieth, if he bids them so. The elders have always said the gods can do anything. (They meant the Icewarden, but the Icewarden does not care for the stars, so Falcon does the logical and applies it to the Arcanist too.)

His clan warns him that it's folly. That the world is unkind and he'll only have his hopes dashed. That the Arcanist will never allow an audience. Falcon smiles and goes anyway. He's going to touch the stars.

---

The world is big and unkind and a bit confusing. The Arcanist doesn't grant an audience, they were right about that. Falcon smiles and learns everything anyone is willing to teach him, which is quite a lot actually. But Arcane is a realm of dreamers, and they are not going to help him touch the stars. They don't tell him it's not possible - but their warnings are even more dire than his home clan's because they know the science.

Falcon smiles and thanks them for their time and continues his research.

---

It's after several years in Arcane that Falcon catches wind of a scientific paper out of the Sunbeam Ruins. His colleagues - because that's what they are by now, really - are thoughtful. But they are dreamers, and it stays firmly in the realm of what if? Falcon, of course, decides he needs to meet the dragon who wrote it, and thus begins his longest journey yet.
