Greer, The Tormented

It took some time convincing Mairen that she was his charge, but after several adventures the two became close. Mairen liked scavenging old campsites of the beastclans and re-purposing what she found into apparel. Not always the safest of hobbies, but caution wasn't needed with Greer at her side. “I would like to make a mask,” Marien said one day. A simple enough craft, so they set out looking for objects that caught her eye. They happened upon some feathers strewn about next to a dark red splotch on the ground. Greer kept an eye out for whoever just devoured their meal while Marien gathered feathers. They wandered into the Gladeveins and walked alongside shimmering rivulets. Marien abruptly glided off Greer's back and reached into the water. Greer had to stoop low to see the banded agate in her claws. “Baubles, but no base,” Marien said. She turned around and headed back, leading them into a denser part of the Wilds. There wasn't much light left in the day when they stepped into a small clearing. Marien darted out and grabbed something white off the ground. She turned to look at Greer and placed a skull on her head. “Good fit; I think this will work.” |
“Blasphemy! How dare you make a mockery of my son's grave!” A hunched over Longneck came into the clearing carrying a candle and waving a tome at them. Mairen walked closer to it before Greer could stop her and removed the skull, holding it out to the Longneck. “Apologies; I've never seen a Longneck here before and didn't recognize your burying ritual.” The Longneck snatched away the skull and clasped it to it's chest. “Of course not. You dragons don't bother learning about the creatures you share this world with, or those that perished during your creation. You think you can just do whatever you want because you have more power.” It spat on the ground. “I might not be able to do much to your race, but you... you I curse!” The Longneck dropped its cane and began chanting. Greer tried to call out to Mairen, but found himself unable to speak. He took one step closer and then couldn't move. The chanting grew louder and his vision blurred. “I want you to know loss like we do.” It sounded like the Longneck was whispering in his ear. “A bit of blood from each...” Greer felt something sharp stab into the skin between his toes. “...will keep your loved ones out of reach. Until the pendant clears, only one shall stay that you hold dear.” A cold object was forced under his claw. “I'm not completely heartless though; as long as each generation's heir wears the pendant they will be immune to the curse. If you should perish before the pendant clears though, you're whole line will perish with you.” |

“What happened to the Longneck?” Mairen was in front of him peering into an eerie blood-red pendant. “And where did this come from?” Greer shook his head to clear it and saw that the skull had been returned to the grave. “I think it's part of the Longneck's curse.” “Curse? You do not actually believe it cursed us, do you?” Mairen put the pendant on. “If anything, it will probably hire some Serthis to poison us in our sleep; a less potent poison was most likely the cause of our paralysis anyways.” She flew up to Zerius's back and nestled between his shoulder blades. “Come, let us go home.” Upon returning to the clan Zerius learned they'd been gone for a whole day without realizing it. Unnerved, he suggested a journey to The Southern Icefield to Mairen; the reason he gave was to visit the clan he stayed with as a hatchling, but he was really counting on the cold to keep any would-be Serthis assassins at bay. |
The trip was uneventful and they were welcomed into the clan. Greer took on the task of fishing around the ice floes and Mairen continued to make apparel out of whatever clans members brought her. Eventually they even had a nest of three eggs together. One particularly cold evening just days after his offspring hatched, Greer was unable to catch any fish and felt uneasy without knowing why. He decided to head home early and surprise Mairen, but she and the hatchlings were nowhere to be found. He asked around, but nobody knew where they were. Just when Greer was about to set out with a search party, his eldest daughter wandered into view. Greer asked Talora where her mother and siblings were before noticing the cursed pendant dangling from the Talora's neck. He asked why she was wearing it. “Mother said to tell you they were going to the Icewarden,” Talora, despite being a guardian, spoke in monotones like a fae, “and 'until the pendant clears, only one shall stay that you hold dear.' I tried to keep up, but the pendant made me too slow. When will they be back?” Greer couldn't believe what he was hearing. He looked at his clan members in disbelief, but none of them would meet his eyes. His failure at protecting his charge and family were so overwhelming that he could only manage two words: “Home first.” |
|
The next day Greer and Talora started the return journey to the Viridian Laybrinth. He couldn't bear to stay in the Icewarden's domain despite knowing the deity had nothing to do with the loss of his family. It was clear now that the curse was a real type of magic and this was just the first of many tragic events to come. Upon returning to clan Arboreus, Greer left Talora with his mother and settled down on the outskirts of the clan. Unable to live with his failure and unable to die because of his daughter, Greer spends as much time as possible in a potion-induced slumber. |
