Anubis
Herbologist
Learning the Old Ways

"I've heard the old stories, but I didn't believe them to be true."

Remarkably soft-spoken and thoughtful for a spiral, Anubis is a quiet addition to Oakrest by way of a long journey. His salves and poultices are known among the clan for scrapes with the nastier things they find in Carinstone, and his wide repertoire of knowledge on many things is well respected among dragons young and old. He is known to step in as a fighter in a pinch, and his runes of decay have stopped more than one of the dead from rising too far up the tunnels so that others may finish them off. He is steady, sure, and intensely fascinated by pretty much everything.

Anubis grew up on the stories found in his father's library. Just as he learned ancient runes long forgotten, he also learned not everything found in books was to be believed. He watched his father's work with a stillness not often found in spirals, even as his mind followed the mental calisthenics necessary to understand complicated formulae, spells, documents, and records.

This stillness, this quiet, was unsettling to some, but Anubis was never made to feel unwelcome. A few querying stares, a few quirked eyebrows at the strangeness of Cat and Milo's son was all that met him. He grew, a silent and studious echo to his father's shadow. He longed to take over his father's work, to tend the library - or better, the tombs - to be trusted with such an honor would have made his heart sing.

But time passed, and ... nothing. Anubis was naught but a pale echo of his father's bright light. In another dragon, perhaps this would have bred contempt, envy, patricide. In Anubis, it pulled him deeper into study. He learned things he thought, perhaps, his father didn't know. He learned older and older stories, stories from Ages long past. But every time he referenced them, Milo knew them.

Anubis cast his net for knowledge wider still. He started on the lore of the Scarred Wasteland. From there, he searched through tomes on pathology, learned what he could from listening and questioning and reading. But even there, his father excelled. Was there nowhere he could reach that his father had not gone before him?

Disconsolate, he let his thoughts wander from study. Perhaps, he thought, this was not his path. Perhaps he was never meant to best his father. Perhaps shadow work was all that was to be found there.

He followed his own mother for a time, learning what he could of her position. But he was ill-suited to guard work. While he was still agile as spirals often are, he was too much a thinker to serve more than a few nights' watch before they all decided it was best if he found other pursuits.

He sired eggs, but in family he found no great reward. His children, mirrors like their mother, were strange to him, given over to the hunt. He did not try again.

He entertained leaving to serve in Plaguebringer's ranks, but this held no solace, either. He was not ready to perhaps go the way of all things. He wanted to see his father smile at him as he had when he was young and repeated recipes and drew clumsy approximations of warding runes. But worse, he wanted to prove himself able to hold the task that he wanted for so much of his life.

He languished. Books held no great love for him any longer. Irritation made him restless, and what brought him to twist in knots as younger spirals often did was the indecision, the inaction to be had in his own impotence. Time passed, and Anubis grew sullen.

Talk reached him, eventually. There were those who wanted to leave, to see the rest of the continent, to bring their ways and their knowledge of the Contagion to the other flights. What could there to be lost? Anubis deliberated, but briefly. He traveled with the others.

It wasn't a particularly jovial group that left home, but neither were they pathetic and wanting. They packed well but lightly, and soon Anubis and the others saw the sea, and with it a new destination - the Starfall Isles.

This was the birthland of his father! This, surely, would bring him an edge that he needed! Anubis studied while the others went on without him. He pored over books, learning from the librarians of the greatest Library known to dragon. But even here, even among the mages and scholars of his father's home, he knew there was no matching him.

He stayed until he was sure all hope had played out. He traveled again.

Through the Starwood Strand, Anubis saw stars like he had never seen them before or after. He felt as if, perhaps, they would have spoken to him had he been of the proper inclination. And perhaps that was it. Perhaps he was chasing his father's tail, only to learn that his father had left long ago. That there was nothing to gain from trying to fill a role that was already filled.

Perhaps it was time for a new leaf.

He traveled to the Viridian Labyrinth for a time. He had known sickness while he was in the Scarred Wasteland, but he had also learned that there were herbs and poultices that could be rendered into salves for healers. As a dragon from Plague, he was met with thinly veiled distrust by some, but open friendship from others. Some worried about the rumor that all dragons from the Scarred Wasteland carried some horrible illness that could break forth at any moment. Others wanted to share with Anubis all they knew.

And they knew plenty. While Anubis had no hand for gardening, his quick mind was well-suited for cataloging recipes to ease the suffering of others. And better, he learned of pigments that would make his runes stronger, that would bind the magic to them all the more strongly. He learned lost ways, that he had not hoped to find on this sojourn.

But the Viridian Labyrinth also eventually proved unsettling to Anubis. He knew, even here among his patron's sister's children, that he would find nothing, ultimately, to bring him a feeling of use, a sense of peace.

Burdened with fewer belongings but more knowledge, Anubis left again, this time heading north. Why not see what those among Earthshaker's kin had to hide among the caverns? Why not find what knowledge was lost when the Pillar shattered?

The Shattered Plain was a desolation. And Greatwyrm's Breach, while indeed great, was nothing more than a chatty welcome wagon. Anubis found himself viewing these too-welcoming children of the earth with something like disdain.

All things have something to teach us, his father had once told him. Anubis didn't know if his father remembered passing that wisdom, but it stuck itself fast and wormed its way through Anubis' thoughts often enough. So he pressed on, and he looked for what this flight might have to offer.

In time, he found Cairnstone Rest.

Here, this was something he understood. This, he gathered, was why his father had guarded the tombs back home. This was the purpose of the runes, for here the bones were restless and the dead sometimes rose. And it was here that he met the dragons of Oakrest.

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Ink found him. And in Ink, Anubis found a kindred spirit. A mage, but one discontent to just learn for learning's sake. She took him in, introduced him to Shadowstalk, who brought him to meet the clan elders. Copperlight and Bordeaux were perplexed by him, but Chandra and Sangue met him with approval. He would stay for as long as he wanted, to learn and be learned from by these dragons who would guard the memories of their dead and would return the ancient ones to rest or burn them to ashes if they couldn't.

Time passed, and where in other places Anubis was still met by restlessness, here he was needed. He knew antivenoms for the bites of certain creatures, and he gave Ink pigments to bind her runes, and he sought Marliss' library over and under until he found - at last! - a piece of knowledge so deeply encoded in the Old Runes that Anubis had never come across it even once.

His heart thundered in his chest at the discovery. If there was one thing, there may be more! He could not wait to write his father, and he hoped the letter would be met with the smile he so longed to see.
