Biography

Quote:
Keyframe As defined by the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows
n. a moment that seemed innocuous at the time but ended up marking a diversion into a strange new era of your life—set in motion not by a series of jolting epiphanies but by tiny imperceptible differences between one ordinary day and the next, until entire years of your memory can be compressed into a handful of indelible images—which prevents you from rewinding the past, but allows you to move forward without endless buffering.

Past the tropics of the Everbloom, beyond the waterways of the Gladeveins, on the edge of each begins a series of dragon nests and lairs shrouded in shade by the thickest of treetops. This place is known as the Shrieking Wilds. Where familiars swing from the tree tops and dragons travel by branch. And to those that live there no day in their lives could be as memorable as the night the wilds burned. And among these no dragon other than a Skydancer by the name of Fern knows the truth of what happened on this night.

Now Fern was not like other skydancers. She did not take to the wind so easily, she neither knew how to flip or dive, for the flap of her wings was rendered useless at the form which they took. Leaf like in their build she knew them to be meant for nothing along the lines of flight. And when inquired why it was she never flew she would reply to some.

"Like a leaf I will fly when the wind chooses to carry me, for this is the Gladekeeper's will." And she would move along the ground once more, as though to further her point. And what importance does such a skydancer have, one might ask, that she would ever have importance in a story such as this? Much.

For it was from the south east, from the Ashfall Waste, that fire drakes made to claim land. They attacked on the edge of the wilds, the rest being far too dense for anyone who was not native or neighboring to it to navigate. They burned like a bee-sting their flame and lick destroying all it touched. Dragons made for flight were easiest of targets for in the sky they were visible and they too became victim of the fires burn.

But Fern, who knew neither flight nor the burn of a flame, settled herself into the ash and soot and covered herself to remain unseen. There on the ground which she had always known, she was kept safe from the brawl. With the battle raging on each and every one that fought back was burned down. (It is said by some that during this battle the could feel the behemoth stir, as though something within or beneath was mourning.)

Finally it was that a neighboring earth clan joined into the fray, fighting the fire drakes back.

Body heated from the sparks that fell from the sky and dirtied with the ashes of the burnt trees Fern weakly-and with great sorrow- pulled herself from the destruction. A cool breez past through, rustling the lone dragoness's wings like leaves. And as though to confirm what the skydancer herself had always said she was carried away by it till she once again found ground at the Gladeveins.

Cautiously she lowered herself into the water and began to wash away the ash and soothe her burns. As if by magic, or by some godly will a tuft of grass began to grow rapidly about her chest. Soft as fur it was and upon her shoulder small fungi began to sprout, beautiful and green. Her body like bark hardened it's scales, and upon her brow were flower stems.

'If this is what the water has done for me...' She thought. 'Then perhaps it can cure the land as well." For the next few days she took time to weave baskets, making them tight and thick. The openings were filled with clay and set aside to harden. On a stick which she rest over her back she laced many baskets onto and made her way to back to the wreckage.

The water however did not cure the land as she had first thought. And she stared in confusion and dismay at the now dark water which had mixed seemingly useless with the ashes. Her breast shook with a sob that threatened to leave her and then she heard a voice. Something telling her 'The ground is now fertile, it needs only you.'

She pondered this for a moment and with a deep breath her claws extended to the ground. Something within her seemed to blossom and with it the ground too began to part, breaking through the earth the trees returned as though nothing had happened, flowered blossomed among them and quickly the vines weaved and tangled in their branches, the canopy tops once more shrouded the land in shade and Fern stood shakily watching it all. It was then that she realized the grass and plants upon her own form were not the work of the water, but of her own will.

Gathering a bag of seeds she set out, staff at her side. With her new found ability she made to restore life to any and all of the Labyrinth that had suffered through peril.

And while no other drake may know how it is the forest healed so suddenly, as though the battle never happened. Fern carries the truth with her in silence.

Now she resides with the Powder clan in the Everbloom. She weaves baskets of tropical nature here and uses them to carry her water when she travels. Her bag of seeds ever at her side.

Millenniums from now dragons will revere her in name such as the Lifegiver and the the Treegrower.
