For his diligence and commitment to his work, there was something in the young Spiral dragon that allowed his curiosity to shine through on occasion. Sometimes it was an oddly shaped rock, sometimes it was a luminescent vine that had covered nearly the entire expanse of an elderwood tree. On this particular day, it was something that any creature with an inquisitive soul would be drawn to without fail.
The pool in question was mesmerizing; the liquid sparkled with more frequency than the vast expanse of stars in the sky, and not a single ripple disturbed the dark surface that innocuously hid the true depth of the pond. Not a soul could blame the Spiral dragon for being enraptured by its beauty, for stepping forward until the tips of his claws were swallowed by the cool water. He stretched his neck forward, jaws falling open to capture the fresh, damp scent of the little alcove in which the pool was nestled. His eyes caught a gleam across the water that made his breath catch in his chest. There, nestled in the rock, sat a large gem that glowed with some sort of strange energy. The dragon immediately remembered his duties, his mind racing as he tried to discern what the gem was, what it could do, what he could do with it… what sort of scrolls could he enchant with it?
The young Arcanist sat back on his heels, reaching over the water to grasp at the gem embedded in the wall of the alcove. His claws wavered in the air just inches from the stone, so without pause he leaned further over the pond and reached, just able to hold it—
Click, rumble, thunk! The world turned end over end and suddenly the dragon’s body was submerged in icy water, the shock enough to make him gasp in surprise and suck in liquid, not air. He immediately began coughing desperately, leading him to take in more water as he tried to break the surface, to breathe—
He couldn’t breathe—
He couldn’t think—
Please—
…
…
Some dull pressure registered on his neck for a moment before it was replaced with something else pulling at him, tugging. His body became even colder—how was that even possible—before his lungs spasmed and he began coughing, hacking, sucking in air, finally. After an impossibly long time, the buzzing in his head coalesced into recognizable words:
“Hello? Are you alright? Just breathe, deep breaths…”
The Arcanist forced his eyes open, nearly launching back into a renewed coughing fit as he beheld a gorgeous Spiral dragon gazing down at him with frightened concern in her eyes.
“Hi… how are you feeling?” She murmured gently.
“I,” he started gracefully as a bit of water dripped out of his mouth. “I am… alive.”
“Yes, thankfully. These traps have been popping up all over the place, and despite our best efforts to remove them before anyone gets hurt…” she trailed off, gazing down at him with eyes almost as wide as his. “Sorry, it doesn’t help anything if I get all worked up… my name is June.”
“Idry,” the Arcanist murmured. “I mean, my name. It’s Idry.”
“Idry…” June repeated, a gentle smile on her muzzle. “It’s very nice to meet you.”
—
Little did Idry know what would come from that encounter. Little did he know that the beautiful dragon that had saved his life would become his first love, and the mother of his hatchlings. With time and his role demanding more of his attention, he drifted apart from June, but he will never forget her or her kindness.
As his workload increased, poor Idry found himself with a not entirely unwelcome intruder in his lair; a young, curious Spiral by the name of Lanys. Before long Idrys found himself teaching her his work, heartened by her propensity to learn and willingness to help (even if she is occasionally more of a nuisance than a boon.)
With his granddaughter coming to live in his clan, a spunky apprentice to help soothe his stress and bring excitement back to his work, and a never-ceasing passion for assisting his clanmates, Idry is nothing but content with his position in life.
