Biography
My lungs cry out for the ocean. That's why I'm sick. Yes, that's all. No, I don't want to go home. He took a deep breath and felt salty air fill him. He sighed it out, then cracked an eye open. Demetrius was lying a short futon, so small that half his body coiled onto the floor. As Caelyn watched, the priest snored, utterly exhausted by the long flight. Caelyn chuckled. He already felt better. "Aye, of course you're laughing at me." A shiny golden Skydancer burst through the door, balancing a platter of royal oysters on his hips. He took the plate in his mouth and set it down hard on the nightstand. Caelyn squinted, his eyes burned. "Well? What are you looking at, Coatl boy? Eat up!" Caelyn glanced at Demetrius. He was better at talking to others. But he was deeply asleep. "Of course my brother would be busy and make me feed the damn Coatl," Ryan grumbled. "Thank you," Caelyn said. "Thank yourself." "Thank you," Caelyn said to himself, then scarfed the whole plate in moments. |

By the end of it, Ryan was staring at him in awe. Caelyn surveyed the boy's sun-gold facet wings and blushed deeply, picking oyster fragments from his teeth. "Good night! That's the scariest thing I've seen since General Raeford." Ryan hefted the platter onto his back, then asked more shyly, "Do you spar? I found a rapier while going through your things." Skydancers are a bit nosy."Aye. I learnt a bit from the academy." "Really?" Ryan sprang forward and put his talons on Caelyn's chest. The plate fell off his back with an iron clang! Demetrius turned over with a deep snore. "Ryan!" Wren poked his head through the doorway and snatched Ryan's tail in his mouth. "We'll have to try it sometime!" Ryan said to Caelyn, sounding breathless. "In the courtyard by the moonlight like in the old stories!" Still blushing, Caelyn watched him get dragged away. When all was quiet, he crept to Demetrius' cot and slept on the floor beneath his arm. |
The Background:
They say Coatls are impetuous. They like to caper, leap, and try their wings well before they're ready.
One winter day -- when Caelyn's sires weren't looking -- he wriggled free of the noisy nest, stumbled to the edge of his mountain perch, and leapt into the air.
Beauty. Sheer beauty. He gasped in the clean, piercing air and reveled in the white sunlight playing along his wings. As he raced through the sky, he swooped past a murder of chattering crows, playfully snapping and biting at them.
Being a hatchling, he didn't understand that winter was more than near -- it was crouched beside him in the sky, whetting its icy blades against the gray-black clouds. The last thing he remembers was a strong gust of wind and a tearing sound.
Then nothing.
When he awoke, an Imperial Skelgarn Priest was coiled around him. He still remembers the white rime of snow dusting Demetrius' blue-green scales, the glassy coating over Demetrius' talons. The world around them both was sheer, harsh, unbroken white. Its brilliant glitter hurt their eyes.
Then Caelyn laughed aloud. The strong, handsome Imperial was missing all his whiskers!
Demetrius placed a paw on his head, scowling, but eventually had to laugh, too.
They also say Coatls aren't meant to be priests. But that doesn't stop Caelyn from rollicking in Demetruis' footsteps, mispronouncing his prayers and forgetting his gods. And though Demetrius is rarely without a scowl, neither would have life any other way.
