Fate is a prophetess of limited ability, having always known the scorn of not being ‘good enough’. Her visions only manifest in the heat of battle, and usually only pertain to the combat itself, which is only marginally useful (and can even be detrimental if the vision is particularly long or distracting). This mockery of a ‘gift’ left her scorned by her clan, so she took her leave, wandering from region to region, forever a mockery.
At first, she might have been content just to find somewhere to “belong”… but as time passed, Fate became embittered by her lot in life. More than mere acceptance, she wanted the power and status to dominate those who had mocked her, to humiliate them as they had done to her.
She gained an opportunity to do just that through a sinister Guardian who called himself ‘Glitch’. She met him at a crossroads, snarling at a cluster of pale dragons to pick through a gnarled pile of scrap. A few softly-spoken words of flattery and she’d convinced him to confide in her, while his lowly servants fumbled at their task.
There was a rift growing in his clan, a divide between whimsy and efficiency. Glitch wanted to cull the refuse from their lair, to get rid of the ‘free-loading’ oracles and artists who didn’t contribute to his machinations, but his patriarch, Thoth, refused to excise them. If only Glitch could gain the trust of the artists, if only he could convince Thoth that he had everyone’s best interests at heart…!
But Fate was like them, wasn’t she? An ‘artist’? She could gain their trust, spy on them for Glitch, and in return he could give her a position of power in their clan. Glitch found the arrangement very agreeable indeed… and though Fate had no interest in the cold Guardian or their coupling, she was very interested in her new status and the opportunities that it afforded…
It would be enough, she convinced herself, to soothe the ache in her chest. It had to be.
Personality
She’s used to being in the background, so she’s not much of a public speaker. Not particularly suave, if you do manage to throw her off balance you’ll quickly gain her respect. She longs for real companionship, but has convinced herself that her arrangement with Glitch is the closest she might get.
