After the Shade ravaged the clan, Verna learned something quite interesting about herself: she was magic. She only learned this because the Shade and the fact that it's ethereal venom hadn't affected Verna. Except Verna wasn't magic like Europa. Alas, she could not heal broken bones or mend torn hide. But Verna could grow plants with magical properties!

Verna truly believed that her plant growing was useless. Sure, her plants glowed a little, or appeared out of practically nowhere, but they were just strange looking flowers and mushrooms. Neta agreed that they were odd. She was the resident botanist and knew every plant that grew within the Gladekeeper's domain. After some experimentation, it was determined that there were more magical properties than just glowing and growing. Europa agreed, there was more to the plants than they had originally thought. As the experimentation continued, it was found that the plants had all sorts of properties: healing, poisoning, neutralizing, and everything in between. Europa urged Verna and her friends to stay quiet for fear of abuse. They all agreed.

So Verna became the clan's horticulturist. She grew more and more plants to be experimented on. She spends a lot of time with Koyane and Neta, since they are the clan's resident plant experts. Linden tends to follow them around, which Verna enjoys. Koyane and Neta are well versed in the field of plant studies, but Verna is not. She just happens to have this ability and only knows as much as they teach her. Linden doesn't seem to know as much as Koyane and Neta either, which Verna enjoys. She doesn't like the feeling of being the stupid one. But the two of them are definitely trying! They listen carefully, and Verna voices her concerns. Linden tries to...when she knows the words.

Verna was born only a few days journey from the clan's lair. Her first home was dedicated to the Gladekeeper. Worshipping her and only her, all day, all night, every season. Verna never minded that her clan was so repetitive. Praying and hailing the Gladekeeper seven or eight times a day. While it was somewhat monotonous, Verna loved her clanmates and family memebers. She just felt... restless.

As she got older, the adults and elders were less reserved around her. Verna was able to hear the local gossip more and more. She felt as though gossiping was wrong, but couldn't pry her ears away. It was just too fascinating! Often, Verna was daydream about having the adventures and interesting happenstance that everyone would talk about from different clans. Nothing exciting ever happened in her home. Everyone was far too dedicated to the Gladekeeper and honouring her name and image.

Eventually it all became far too much for Verna to bear. She wanted to have the experiences that others had. She was tired of listening to the gossip, she wanted to be the gossip! Verna resolved to run away to a neighbouring clan... But she didn't know where to go. After some time of failed contemplation, Verna heard about a clan that lived a few days walk from her home (or just a few hours of fast flying). The rumours said that the clan was full of strangers, young and old, large and small, dark and light. They also gossiped that it was led by a runaway princess and her ex-con boyfriend. Verna couldn't believe all of the rumours. They were so delightlfully terrible. So decadently different. Verna slipped away that first night after learning their location, and hasn't returned home since.
