Maelstrom is a headstrong, independent Skydancer. Though a bit standoffish towards dragons she does not know, she is extremely caring and compassionate towards her frail mate.

Born in the Ashfall Waste, Maelstrom was raised in a strict environment. Hatchlings were expected to be seen and not heard; to not speak unless spoken to. She hated it. Every opportunity she had to get away from her peers and explore, she took. And when the adults weren't watching, she would lead her fellow hatchlings in expeditions as well. Needless to say, she got in trouble. A lot. She was not new to harsh words and slaps on the wrist.

She often told the other hatchlings of her plans to run away. She was always very detailed and passionate about the idea, assuring the others that she absolutely would do it this time. That every grounding was the last straw and she would be gone by morning. Of course, no one believed she would actually do it. Her friends would nod and go along with her ramblings and then brush it aside when she was through. They did every time, until one day, she finally took off. It caught the entire clan by surprise and threw many of the older dragons into fits of anger. A few took off to find her and bring her home, but it was to no avail.

Maelstrom had taken off running. And she didn't plan to stop until she was out of fire territory and hit the Sea of a Thousand Currents. The plan, as she saw it, was to travel north towards the Tangled Wood. There, she had heard there was the freedom to be your own dragon. Not everyone threw it in positive light, of course. Most dragons referred to it as 'lawless' and 'chaotic'. But all she could see was the promise of freedom and opportunity.

After hours, the soot of the Ashfall Waste became lightened and then entirely disappeared, leaving warm white sand beneath her feet. Tired and out of breath, the young adolescent Skydancer finally stopped and allowed herself to rest. She peered out over the sand, taking in the unusual sight of clear skies and crystal blue water, much cleaner and more pristine than that of the Blacksand Annex. However, a dark lump on the landscape caught her eye.
