~~*~~

In the moonlight I felt your heart
Quiver like a bowstring's pulse
In the moon's pale light, you looked at me
Nobody knows your heart.

When the sun is gone, I see you
Beautiful and haunting, but cold
Like the blade of a knife,
So sharp, so sweet
Nobody knows your heart.

All of your sorrow, grief, and pain
Locked away in the forest of the night
Your secret heart belongs to the world
Of the things that sigh in the dark
Of the things that cry in the dark.

-- 'Mononoke-Hime (English)' -- Princess Mononoke OST

~~*~~

Despite his size Raijin is still young, made apparent by his lanky appearance and by his personality. Most of the time the lightningborn imperial is prideful, outgoing, prone to sulking when upset and somewhat hyperactive with an impatient streak the size of the Southern Icefield. In other words, he's a bit of a dork. Still he's friendly enough, though recent experiences have taught him to be more wary of those he doesn't yet know well.

There's a more sombre side to the imperial's personality, however, which stems from the loss of his beloved mate, Yue, and two of their daughters, Lei and Cho. Deep down, he feels guilty for Yue's death in particular, partially believing that, had he been with her when she'd been foraging for herbs, he could've protected her when she'd needed him the most. His unwavering love and devotion for his friends, hatchlings, and the memory of his departed mate are what keeps him going in the face of his bereavement.

The third youngest of a set of similar-looking quadruplets, Raijin's early life is something he doesn't really share with others. When he came of age he was given the job of an analyser, to study parts of the Lightning realms for changes and to relay the information of said changes back to his employers. Like most of his breed, Raijin took pride in and threw himself head-first into his work, however his life soon changed when two of his brothers had decided to be morons and - quite literally - dragged him along to terrorize a tribe of centaurs in a forest on the borders of Lightning, Light, and Water.

It was there that he met Kelpie, Yue, and Iele, and once they'd helped him out of his predicament with the Wintermane centaur tribe, rather than returning to his job, Raijin instead decided to join the trio on their journey to the Sea of a Thousand Currents.

Relationships

Kelpie - Though he regards the waterborn guardian as a friend, Raijin knows little about her, which is, in a way, his fault. Despite the guardian's friendly and child-like personality, Raijin found himself put-off by her tendency to suddenly space out for varying periods of time and, due in part to his imperial nature, he chose to remain distant towards her. Still, when she was put into a coma by a serthis, Raijin did what he could to help Yue in caring for the waterborn dragon - including becoming a substitute teacher to Kelpie's Charge, a mirror hatchling named Iele.

Iele - At first, Rai saw the mirrorling as nothing more than a bother to tolerate, lest he wanted to be snapped in half by Iele's adoptive mother. After he and Yue were expecting their first clutch; however, Raijin's stance towards Iele changed for the positive, and he became a teacher to her in Kelpie's stead while the guardian had been in a coma due to serthis venom.

Yue - Though distant towards Kelpie and Iele, it was a different story when it came to Yue. It was love at first sight, though this is a fact that Raijin prefers to keep to himself. Not only was she pleasing to look at, she lacked the archetypical holier-than-thou attitude associated with her breed; however, every rose had its thorns, and Yue's came in the form of her sharp tongue and abrasive attitude. Still, after the umpteenth time she shut down his attempts to get to know her, Raijin began to question why he was even trying in the first place. He later witnessed a hidden side to the pearlcatcher; however, for underneath the prickly lone wolf attitude lay a kind soul who wished to help her friends -- qualities Raijin admired. Upon learning this, the imperial redoubled his efforts and was rewarded when Yue finally opened her heart to him, eventually returning his feelings.

Antheraea - Raijin does not trust or like the white skydancer, and though he keeps it to himself, he believes that Antheraea is responsible for Yue's death due in part to the skydancer's initial refusal to interfere in their lives until after the tragedy occurred. The bird-like dragon's overall condescending personality and tendency to point out the flaws of others rubs Raijin the wrong way and, deep down, the imperial would give anything to have an excuse to wring the bird's scrawny neck.

Hoshi and Zhen - The two surviving hatchlings of the four-egg clutch he fathered with Yue, Raijin is extremely protective of his daughters, and with good reason.
