In an apparent stroke of fortune, the same week Maturin completed his apprenticeship, Otava received a request from Clan Windfall for immediate healing assistance. Rather than travel himself, the old healer judged that Maturin was skilled enough to treat the described ailment, sending the imperial off with a satchel of herbal supplies and some parting words of advice.

Thrilled to be starting his very own assignment, Maturin packed the medicinal supplies, his study journals and the few basic instruments he'd collected. The ferry leaving the Bastion for the Respite was mostly empty, leaving the young imperial free to pace the small deck to alleviate his nerves. It was no secret that the dragons of the Respite had reputations to rival that of his birth-clan's more notorious members. But he was comforted by the fact that healers were always respected and welcome, no matter the place.
