The thing that was once a person lurched out of the shadows, dead silent except for the clangor of the trailing chains that had failed to bind it. A twisted wing scrapped across the stone floor behind it, trailing dark ichor and the occasional battered tuft of blue fuzz. Its eyes, if it even had any, were almost completely hidden beneath a matted mane.

It opened its blackened maw as if to scream, but only the void bubbled out.

There are things in this world that life should never deign to meet, let alone wield, but so rarely do the people who work with them truly understand the danger they've put themselves in. Even with all possible safety measures in place, the call of the void can be quite convincing to those too proud for second thoughts.

Destriana Castaway liked to think she was smart. Having graduated with top honors, it wasn't an entirely unfounded belief. Easily securing a position at Visseron Biotech with her parents' endorsement, she steadily climbed the ranks, eventually earning the rank of Chief of Biosecurity for the Tyrion branch.
