The Guardian of Nests

Vuldeinkoraaviik was very worried, she could not find her charge. Not that they were lost, but that they were never found. A charge is very important to guardians, at least they are according to her mother, and she couldn't seem to find one. Her nestmates and childhood friends all find theirs, but she never once felt the urge she has been so often told about. Her clanmates teased her relentlessly, asking if she was truly a guardian or perhaps there was something wrong with her. Vul grew disheartened and distant, and one day could no longer take the teasing. So she set out with low spirits, leaving her birth clan to seek her charge. Head drooping and tail dragging she crossed ever terrain imaginable, journeyed to the territory of each flight, meandered through untamed wilds, wandered through hostile boundaries, and rested with hundreds of clans. Days turned to months, and months into years, and no compulsion to protect. Dejected, she curls up in the mud of a rainforest as the rain soaks her through. Just about to close her eyes she spots something, a tiny ember winking in and out. Drawing closer she finds the source, a mud covered fire egg, it's firey cracks slowly dying. She brings in close to herself, attempting to warm it and protect it from the downpour. As the rain clears she attempts to make a small nest for it in her bags as she continues her journey. Along the way she stumbles upon more eggs, she stores them next to the first and carries on. Exhausted and deep within fire's territory, she collapses. Unconscious, she is brought in by a scout and nursed back to health. Even wounded and weak she fiercely guards the collection of eggs under her care, allowing no one to come near them. Noting her devotion, she is offered a job guarding and caring for the eggs of the clan. She now spends her time laying in the deepest portion of the caverns, trending to the lava pools and their cargoes, overjoyed for finally discovering her charges.

"These eggs require constant monitoring, a rotation here, a shift there. Fire eggs are the easiest, just plop them in lava and leave. It's the other elements that require my attentions. It is unlikely an intruder would ever make it this deep within the Scar, but I am ready if such a thing could ever happen."
