Biography
◊ N I D R I A ◊ "to make a vow" ____ CLAN ROLE: title of job/role/etc ____ OTHER NOTES: - looks up to astragali + mulberry shimmer (?) + gossamer flame apparel |
QUIET ◊ SHY ◊ DETAIL-ORIENTED she/her | lesbian | lawful good __________________________________________________ Her first memory is of barren earth and laughter echoing through the canyon. The noise belongs to a cluster of draklings hoping from rock to rock, their newly formed wings fluttering uselessly in the dry heat. Nidria approaches them cautiously, clutching her pearl to her chest. It is small, but it is hers. Not much else is. “What are you doing?” she calls once enough courage is mustered, her voice fracturing from disuse. She barely recognizes it as her own. The draklings turn to her, curious. “You don’t know?” one calls back, trotting closer. “It’s a game. If you step on a crack, you’ll break your mother’s back. Do you want to play with us?” “But I don’t know my mother,” she replies. “And this is the Shattered Plain — it is covered in cracks. To avoid one seems unlikely. Are all of your mothers suffering from spinal injuries?” The long pause that follows lets her know she has said the wrong thing. Finally, the closest drakling speaks. “You’re weird,” he says, snout upturned. He kicks a rock in her direction and the other draklings join in, laughing in a different pitch now. She doesn’t hear her own voice for a long time after that. ____________________________________________________________________ The Wood is quiet this far out, particularly where the edge of the forest meets the Mirrorlight Promenade. Astragali had warned her, but it’s still unsettling. She’s never been to this side of the Wood before but the journey seems second nature to her companion. “Hurry up,” Astragali says once they reach the steps. “We have to get there and back before Aodhan realizes I’m missing.” The satchel on her hip is empty, but it won't be when they return. “Stop,” Nidria says suddenly and Astragali pauses, her foot frozen in mid-air. “What is it?” “There,” she says, tilting her snout towards the crack in the steps. “If you step on a crack, you’ll break your mother’s back.” Astragali tilts her head quizzically and then snorts, purposefully lowering her foot onto the crack before continuing onward. “You’re so weird,” she says over her shoulder. “C’mon, we’re almost there.” Nidria smiles, following suit. |
