Biography

Snappers are not graceful.

That is a common fact. It’s hard to stay graceful when you’re barely larger than a tundra floof – yet nearly twenty times as heavy as them.

Neona has always known that she won’t be able to twirl in the sun together with the spirals and coatls, or run with a fast and ferocious pack of clan hunters.

Does it bother her? Well, sure. Sometimes she thinks that Fate played a cruel joke on her, putting a dancer’s soul into a snapper’s body and making everyone around her laugh at her first clumsy tries to learn the beautiful moves.

Ice is a cold place, both in temperature and in the attitude to those who refuse to accept the harsh life.

And so one day, sick of hearing everyone making fun of her, she jumps from the floe and starts swimming – far, far away from the cold, towards the shining pink shards splitting the sky in the horizon.

It’s warmer there, and everyone is… actually nice? Still, she feels weird, being surrounded by all this brightness and magic humming in the air – she wanted something different, but not that much. And so she ventures further, to the ancient home of all snappers of Sornieth, in hopes of finding there something she seems lacking.

Some part of Arcane stays with her, though. The comet is happily whooshing around, painting the corals grown on her during her voyage in bright pink hues. Friendly celestial body, indeed. She names it Stell. The comet doesn’t seem to have any opinion on its name, neither it seems to understand that it’s being called. But, well, it’s a comet - hard to expect a lot of sapience from a space pebble. Still, it chases away loneliness pretty effectively.

After Starfall Isles, Dragonhome is… barren. It’s bleached by harsh, unforgiving sun, cracked earth all up to the horizon, with sad remnants of the Pillar standing as a mourning monument of what once was. Neona shudders uncomfortably. There doesn’t seem to be any plants or rivers full of fish either, and starving definitely isn’t in her plans. She’s thinking to turn back, when suddenly…

“Excuse me, lady – are you lost?”
She turns around and sees a huge – no, enormous – guardian, whose body is entangled in seaweed and adorned with so many flower leis, crowns and corsages that he’s all covered in the petals, it should look ridiculous. But it isn’t.

He’s waiting for the reply. Neona hums, pensive.
“Lost? Yes… maybe I am.”
“Oh?” He smiles encouragingly, prompting her to tell her story. And so she does.

The guardian never interrupts her, just nods slowly and a bit sadly sometimes. Then simply says:
“I’ve always found it much easier to move around in the water. Water doesn’t care how much you weigh.”

She stares at him, open-mouthed and stunned. He gestures at the seaweed covering him:
“Believe me, you’re not the first big dragon wishing to feel lighter than you are.”

And when she’s still speechless, he adds:
“Come to our lair, we always have food set aside for travelers. And tomorrow I’ll show you the shortest way to the seashore.”
“No, let’s go now”, she blurts suddenly – and blushes when he laughs, boomingly yet pleasantly.
“That’s fine too. I’m Galan, by the way.”
And she smiles, standing to follow him.
“Neona.”
