Mysterious Relief

Tattered Canvas Scrap
As time progresses one must always remember the past, the lessons one may learn from experiences that they will never be able to alter, but will perhaps remember later on. Even though it marches on the preservation of times gone must be upheld, so people and lairs alike may archive and learn and study their past to understand where they are today, and all the hardships that have come before them. For Aurelia such a deed would be paramount to their history, as Rhaegal would say, and to that task fell Mahkah, a ridgeback of ripened age whose body told stories of it's own. Scales dry and caked in dirt and clay, hardened leather wings painted with glyphs and images, the earthen dragon was an interesting sight to behold, if one could get him to stay for long. Under the impression that he must wander this brightened city for the next greatest story to carve upon the already expanding walls in the grand hall of Aurelia, getting him to stop to talk or relax was rather tricky, though definitely not impossible with the ridgeback's apparent age. Catch him when he is carving, however, and ones ears would be talked off into the next century, of technique and methods and the subject he was chiseling in to be preserved for all of time.

Mahkah, of course, is a historian. He, in his creative mind, believes that all good records should be preserved in every imaginable way possible that is logical for a preserved set amount of time, to which he will record via notes and drawings, and, most passionately, through elaborate carvings that he himself will craft. Most notable on his frame is the depictions on his wings, a source of interest and curiosity to any dragon that manages to hold his attention for long, to which he will stutter and excuse himself and most, if not all, see the light drain from his eyes, see the twitch in his feet and claws and he upholds himself, and excuses himself from the conversation, leaving towards the hall with a heavy soul. It was only on one rainy night that he had the truth excavated from his stony heart, buried in his work no longer he spoke of a dragon he no longer knew, a female ridgeback in all the colours of the sun-baked sand, fiery and temperamental and yet sweet all the same. He adored her with all he could and yet he couldn't save her from the flurry of claws and spears and beast folk so rabid that drove her away, promising to return and yet, she never did. And in his sorrows he painted it upon his hide with such pain for he, no matter what, would preserve the past.

It is also in his age that he decided such an attempt to record all he could was a logical idea, as his memory fades more and more with each day. Others have tried to slow the old ridgeback down, to let him rest, but all attempts to do so have been met with kind and gentle rejections, though attempts to offer themselves in place of him to finish off his carvings have been met with rather dry, harsh denials, that he so promptly apologises for thereafter. At best he can be seen slowly walking the streets, familiar by his side, hauling tools to and fro from place to place to where he best decides to carve these light memories, be it in the side of a house, a column, a paving slab or even back within the hall so grand, a building of reflections and hope decorated in murals that he felt ever so proud of creating. Mahkah smiles for his work, for the future and most definitely the past, and although he cannot alter what has been done, he hopes the past will alter the future. Anything, just to see her return.
