Personality
▬▬▬▬▬▬

Sakhalin is as calm and tranquil as the swimming pool in her quarters. Very little seems to faze her, a mindset most useful for her line of work, where a small slip -up could drown multiple dragons, and send the surviving Ridgebacks into full-blown panic attacks. She actually achieves this through daily meditation, an effort to clear her mind of all unnecessary concerns. On top of this, she's...not very social, leading to a rather stoic dragon who tends towards cluelessness and bewilderment with other dragons.

On staff at Aperta, she uses her water magic to enchant pre-made channels throughout the facility to pump clean and fresh water to all sections. The entire system, all her own design, begins with a rainwater collection system about five minutes flight from the medical complex itself. The water runs through underwater pipes to a holding reservoir in the basement of Aperta itself. From there, the water passes through a purification chamber before being pumped around the facility. Used water is drained out through a different system and, depending on where it is from, is either returned to the holding reservoir or sent through another set of larger pipes underground that come out in the cliffs at the south-eastern edge of the Shifting Expanse. Naturally, the Maren in the area are not pleased: one of the tasks of the security team is to maintain the anti-Maren traps around the pipe exits.

It is not always visible, particularly due to her frequent meditations, but Sakhalin's water magic is actually incredibly powerful, especially for a Nocturne. She is known to check the safety precautions perhaps a little too frequently, and her cluelessness can bee seen to turn to fear if too many vie for her attention without giving her space. She suffers from an anxiety disorder, brought on by a misfiring side of her immense water magic. She can see into the future, but it is not controlled, manifesting in two different ways. Primarily, she has a constant precognition that lets her see about 2.14 seconds into the future, a time established through rigorous experimentation. And secondly, and most alarmingly, she may occasionally completely black out from her actual surroundings, receiving visions of sights, sounds, smells, everything to indicate she is within the vision, of something usually horrible happening. To an observer, she will simply drop everything, staring straight ahead with glazed eyes and frequently an expression of terror.

These sudden visions happen very rarely now, though. She's on medication to control them, and her frequent meditation helps her control the anxiety disorder she ended up with because of her power. Now able to live a normal life, she enjoys watching marine wildlife and spelunking.

Ampere is the primary
architect of all expansions
to the complex. Unfortunately,
this often results in
arguments with Sakhalin regarding
where the pipes need to be laid. The
enchantments are delicate, and need
enough space for the runes to be engraved
and the magic to work, in addition to
something called 'fluid dynamics' that
Ampere doesn't seem to understand.
She once had to be reminded that
water flows downhill.

Hyoi is Sakhalin's mate, and was on his own
way to Aperta to take up a post in surgery
when he and his escort, Myotis, found and
rescued Sakhalin. He has looked past her
previous desire to commit suicide, and
has supported her in all her attempts to
recover from both her debilitating visions
and her resulting anxiety.

Valentina, Sakhalin and Pomola together
form a group jokingly referred to as the
'Army Against Ampere'. This is because
the three of them together form the
biggest thorns in her side, due to her
irritation at having to take their considerations
into account. Said considerations always
having to do with the necessities of
central heating, water supply, and air
conditioning, respectively. All rather important.
Sakhalin usually has to work with their
need for large vents throughout the facility
to push cold or hot air through as necessary,
although they are together working on an
experimental method involving
heating/cooling water and running the
result through specially laid pipes in
the floors.
History
▬▬▬▬▬▬

As far as she's aware, Skahlin has had her problems with her visions all her life. As a hatchling, she reports suffering them multiple times a day, usually experiencing some catastrophe in one place or another. An epidemic at the north-west edge of the Thousand Currents, another experiment gone wrong in the factories of the Expanse, a furnace exploding amidst a full lair's worth in Ashfall, a full day's combat on the many borders between Flight territories and the resulting loss of life...She even saw the deaths of her own siblings, so eager to serve their chosen deities, but sent to war. Needless to say, she did not have a happy childhood.

When she saw what her pain was doing to her parents, she left and traveled deep into the desert, hoping the lack of water there would reduce the frequency of her visions. It didn't. In the dust and the heat, she knew dehydration was catching up to her and would soon finish her off, end her suffering at long last. She even lay down on the baking sand, refusing to move and find shelter, just to end it all.

There was a storm. One of the Expanse's infamous thunderstorms unleashing a torrent on the clans nearby. Multiple strikes caused multiple failures in the machines, sparking and flaring and leading the many Sparks to rapidly attempt to fix things, as the Stormcatcher bellowed orders regarding how best to fix what had to be the biggest error of the century. The storm was never supposed to be that big, never supposed to actually threaten the dragons living there. Circuitry overclocked and exploded in dragon faces, experimental AI can to life and immediately set its own directives to cause as much mayhem as possible. Many were falling, and not getting up.
'Um, hello? Miss?'
'She's out cold, let's take her back to Aperta. Exposure, I'd say.'
'Can you hear me?'
Sakhalin realised the sun was still overhead. Not a cloud in sight. And there were two dragons gazing down at her, worried expressions on their faces. One appeared to be a Mirror with a body as pale as hers, in red-and-gold attire meant for the desert, while the other was a purple Nocturne in a dark blue flight suit. From the sound of it...
'Please,' she sputtered out weakly. 'Let me go. Before the storm. I don't want-'
'Storm?' said the Mirror. 'There's not a cloud in sight!'
'But there is an experimental lightning generation planned for next week,' the Nocturne clicked, copying the Mirror's mannerisms but with a frown on his face. 'So experimental that no-one outside of Lightning should know. You're a part of us, now, but this Droplet shouldn't. Poor thing, let's get you inside, see what else is wrong with you.'

In the weeks that followed, Sakhalin found she was in a newly burgeoning medical complex, and that her future sight was a common problem and could be cured. Her prior vision of the storm came to pass, but the complex was able to cope, healing as many as they could and easing the passing of those they couldn't. But they were having difficulties in keeping enough clean water around, during this time. So Sakhalin requested pencil and paper and immediately began drawing plans up to improve on this problem. It was the least she could do, for reducing her visions to about one a day, and the promise of even fewer still.
