Her greatest fear sums Battlesong up well: clipped wings. It's not the pain that sends chills down her spine; rather, it's the principle of being grounded and controlled, of having someone hold the blade and call it "for the greater good." As the Clan's warrior and ambassador alike, Battlesong considers her highest duty not the preservation of safety for her Clanmates, but the guardianship of their freedoms. She holds Freyja in check, when the general would choose restrictions over risk, and even butts heads with Mithro when his pacifistic efforts go too far for her tastes. She guards this freedom so closely not out of loyalty to blind principles, but because she recognizes how easily tyrannies build themselves once a single boundary softens, or a single invasive measure is overlooked. Some Clanmates find her insistences pointless, while others are silently appreciative; all agree that, whether obnoxious or heroic, Battlesong operates outside the influence of self-righteousness or pride. There is something beautiful and pure about her ideology that only the most jaded individuals fail to appreciate.
