Ulysses was well-aware that his parents' service to the Arcanist - i.e., providing offspring for exaltation - came first, regardless of the Skydancer custom of dedicated hatchling-rearing. He didn't care that exaltation was a great honor. What did that even mean, coming from his parents? They rarely visited the nursery; they were always with the leader. It was an excuse for power, wrapped in pretty words. He was not staying in such a clan. He struck out on his own. Traveling through the Starwood Strand, he came across a stream inhabited by a shoal of Scarlet Flycatchers. The territorial fish attacked, and Ulysses escaped with multiple bites. In seeking shelter to nurse his wounds, he stumbled across Deoradhan-Kunibert. Miyako offered to tend his injuries, but Ulysses refused: he had no intention of staying in the Starfall Isles for longer than in took to heal. But without professional medical attention, his bites scarred. Ulysses didn't care: such marks further distanced him from his birth clan. ...Yet he did not immediately move on when he fully recovered: somehow he found himself dawdling. It was The Twins telling him, essentially, Get out or quit moping, that spurred Ulysses into the Coliseum. He rejected his Skydancer disposition towards magical attacks, preferring melee. He progressed quickly, brutally dealing with enemies weaker than himself, until no venue was a challenge for him... no venue, that is, except the Golem Workshop.
