Helios "If you ever feel lonely, look at the moon. Somewhere out there, someone is looking at it too..." Once upon a time, the moon gazed at the sleeping world beneath her, and she saw a newborn hatchling staring back at her. He was alone, for as his parents were attacked by a pack of Mirror dragons, his mother had hidden him safely away, whispering words of love and promises of returning. His mother never did return to retrieve him, and at such a young age, the hatchling did not comprehend anything beyond the veil of loneliness that shrouded his every step. She spoke to him, moon to dragon; goddess to mortal. In dreams she comforted him, and in the nights she accompanied him. For the first time in a long time, the moon condescended to speak with a land-walker. This made her vulnerable, as it would make vulnerable any powerful entity, and this weakness was not overlooked by the dark side. They captured her one day, the mages who swore to follow evil. As the moon spoke to the young dragon she'd become fond of, the dark mages, cloaked darkly so they were near-invisible, casted powerful spells that imprisoned the moon and placed her within their power. The young dragon strove to stop them, but he was easily cast aside. The mages escape and took with them the moon. The loss of the moon landed a terrible blow upon the mortal world. Not only did the moon brighten the night, she also controlled the tides. Now, sailors could no longer depend on the rise and ebb of the tide to be regular. The sea was in turmoil, warring within itself, and chaos spread from the sea to plague the ones who lived upon the land. The young dragon was both terrified and horrified. He knew it was his fault that the moon was captured, and he cursed himself for being so weak. He decided, then and there, that he would save the moon. He would find her, rescue her, and restore order to the world. And so was the rise of Helios, Knight of the Moon, Order-Bringer. |
Helios' journey was not easy. For one, he had absolutely no idea where those dark mages teleported off to, and for another, he had exactly zero fighting experience. Despite the solemness in his oath, he did not know how and where to began looking for the moon. It was a mage of the Starfall Isles who found and rescued him from a group of road robbers. Using powerful magic, the mage sent the evildoers on a one-way, all-expenses-paid trip to jail. Helios saw this, and he was determined that he should learn magic. He begged the mage to train him, and after a moment of hesitation, the mage agreed. It took much too long, but Helios knew that magic would make a difference if he was to rescue the moon. As he grew and matured into a seasoned warrior, the world fell into deeper chaos, and during a particularly mad scuffle, the mage training him was killed. Helios was grieved by the death of his loyal friend, and he became even more determined to restore order. With the fires of the mage's pyre behind him, he set off on his quest to find the moon. |
|
Using tracking magic, Helios found the dark castle where the evil mages resided. He overpowered the guards easily and entered the castle. Almost immediately upon entering the keep did two mages engage him in a fight. After a bitter battle, Helios slew them both. He bullied his way deeper into the castle and into the hold where the moon was held prisoner. The moon was near-dying by the time Helios find her. After years of being cut off from the outside world and the night - her source of power - she was greatly weakened. Helios rushed to free her, but desperate to preserve the chaos, numerous mages materialized to stop him. None of them were a match for Helios, but the mages were nothing if not crafty. Before the last mage breathed his last, he casted a horrific spell on the moon, turning her into a negative of her former self. Weakened, the moon could not resist him, and her dark side consumed her and rose to fight Helios. Though Helios had anticipated many things, he had not realized that the moon had a dark side that could turn her against him. He fought desperately, but as darkness was eternal, the dark moon's power was infinite. Finally, Helios realized that he could not win. He was but a mortal, and she a goddess, not to mention his friend. No matter what he did, no matter the chances and risks, he could not harm his friend and if he destroyed the dark moon, he would also kill the moon along with her. With no more cards left to play, Helios held tight to his promise - that he would save the moon. No longer did his life matter - for indeed, what was his life if the moon were to be destroyed? He knew a way to absorb the corruption that had possessed the moon, and though it would cost him all his energy and his life to weave the spell, he was willing to do it. |
As the dark moon hurled at him bolts and beams of massive power, Helios summoned all his magic and managed to teleport behind her. He grabbed her even as she snarled and shredded his body, and screamed his spell to what god out there would listen to him. The dark moon froze as the final word was spoken, and she convulsed and reverted to the moon's normal form. Confused and blurry-minded, the moon could barely piece together what had happened. Then, with a cry of anguish as the thought connected, she rushed to cradle the dying Helios. He was nearly gone then, and could not hear her last words, or even see her, nor did he realize that he had succeeded in his mission. Bending all her will into one last spell for her dying friend, the moon wove magic into Helios' very being. She saved his soul even as his body failed, and created a new body for the fluttering spirit. Though the moon knew that reincarnation meant thatHelios would lose his memory of him, of her, of them, she did not care. With a final word, she brought a small hatchling to existence, and with it, the remembrance of Helios.
"Sleep well, my knight. When you wake, it will be a new night."
