CW: murder, death, a lot of murder A very long time ago, a spiral was born in the shadows, cold and alone. When he was born, there were two other eggs beside him. Brimming with excitement for his siblings to join him, he curled up and waited... And waited... And waited. Weeks passed, and the lone spiral stared at the two eggs in his nest. He thought it strange that they had not yet hatched, and even stranger that there was no one else around. Tentatively, the spiral came up to the eggs and put a claw to them to tap and see if maybe they would move. Only, when a claw touched one of the eggs, he found their shells so soft and rotten, that his nail sank right in, puncturing the egg. A putrid smell rose to his nose. Now broken open, the egg dripped and leaked, soaking the nest around him. A small mangled frame fell free from the egg as it finally broke open from the build up. Any young dragon might scream and run, or even sit and cry, but this young spiral could only stare for a few moments. He was not sure why, but the image stirred something in him. Just to check, he poked open the second egg, and the same thing happened. It didn't disgust him like it should have to be standing in rotten egg. He didn't even leave until minutes later, stepping out of the nest, dragging along the stench with him. As his tail left along a trail of wetness, he turned to see that their nest had only been hidden by brambles that looked like they had not been disturbed in quite a while. While their nest was protected by brambles, not much care had been put into the protection of the eggs. There was no food in sight, and it was cold and silent all around. It was as if their mother did not care if the eggs lived or died, but felt bad if she had just left them in the open. Or rather, perhaps she didn't want to risk having to see them at all. The young spiral was unsure what to think, but did know he was hungry. After some searching, he found some bugs to munch on. The most satisfying thing about them though, was the crunch sound they made under his paws. Almost like the tearing sound of his sibling's eggs. Eventually, he came across some small animals. Though, he was small, and not very fast, he was quick to learn. If he was quiet enough, he could sneak up from behind them and pounce them from behind. If he was quick enough, he could curl around them, and squeeze. The young dragon watched his first success in awe as a small mouse squirmed and squeaked before slowing down to it's death. Then he ate it... In his childhood, dragons would see him and call him strange. Before they could think to ask him where he came from, he'd be gone. He didnt understand what they meant, but he did think it sounded nice. After a while he was sure his name must be Strange. His childhood was mainly the young spiral honing his hunting abilities as he wandered around. He found great joy in the hunt; doing it as quietly and slowly as possible. As he grew older, hunting wildlife quickly started to bore him. It was time to up his game. He started off small, finding other small, wandering dragons such as himself. He was much more skilled as a hunter than them, and it was easy, killing them. Eventually, he moved on as his skills got better, and he became more confident. He took pride in doing his work quietly, preferring to wrap himself around their necks so tightly they couldn't make a noise as he slowly suffocated them. This went on for a long time, until he'd become skilled enough to keep himself hidden, as well as taking on the challenge of becoming a murderer for hire. Personally, he liked the term assassin more. It turned out there were plenty of dragons who wanted someone in their life dead, but were too wear or afraid to do it themselves. Since they were so willing to offer anything to him, he gladly obliged. The killings continued until dragons started to catch on. Magicians were his biggest pain, and after a few close calls, he found that he had to change up his strategy before he was brought down once and for all. After a while of searching, he stumbled upon a magic tome that promised to give him the abilities of the shadows. Without thinking much, he signed the contract attached and gained the said abilities. There was a sudden change in him. His skin itched as strange markings were carved into him, and he had a pounding headache as a second pair of spiraling horns grew beside his first pair. The shadows swirled and danced around him, closing in on him and circling around him as his change slowly and painfully happened. Several days had passed before he could focus through the pain. He felt invigorated, and instantly set out again to continue on his past endeavors. Many more died by his hands, and magic users were no longer a problem. Until one day, a demon appeared to him. They were like no other dragon he had ever seen before. When asked if he was having fun, Strano confirmed, but did not like the grin on the demon's face that followed. The demon informed him that the contract had been fulfilled on his part, and before Strano could ask him what that meant, the demon held up a glowing purple orb, mumbled a few words, and sucked Strano into it's murky depths. Strano was trapped for a long while. How long, he isn't entirely sure. Time meant nothing to him, for he could not see past the murky depths of his prison most of the time. Every once in a while, the fog cleared to show the face of a dragon who had picked up the orb, but when he tried to talk to them, they dropped him in fright and he never saw them again. Though he had many owners of his orb after that, only one was a familiar face. The demon from before picked up his orb and grinned down at him as the fog cleared. Strano hissed and spat at him, but the demon was not listening. Strano only knew that the demon carried him around for a while until the face of a nocturne dragon was shown to him. Not long after that, he was released. Strano's release was not quite what he was expecting though. As he was met with fresh air, he hissed as he opened his eyes to see reality again for the first time in a long while. As soon as he saw the dragon that released him, he struck at her, intending to kill her. Only, when he heard her say "Stop" He had no choice but to stop. He was confused at first, as it seemed that his actions were no longer his own. She said stop, and therefore he was compelled to stop. The nocturne proceeded to explain that he was now her demon slave, so to speak, until he fulfilled her wish of bringing back the dead. If he could not, then he would go back into the orb. Strano knew he could do no such thing. He dealt in shadow magic and killing. Not life. He did not tell her this though. He only explained that he was not at full strength from being in the orb for so long, and would need some time. Lilavati understood, but he would do as she said until then. Sometime after his release from the orb, Strano ran into the demon he had met before. The one who put him in the orb. By order of Lilavati, he could not attack the demon, and the demon knew that. It seemed that the demon had gained himself entrance into this clan, which was not hard, and his name was Noire. Why Noire was there, was beyond Strano though, but for some reason, whenever Strano tried to talk about Noire and their past, he found that he could not. Instead, all he could do was begrudgingly live among the clan until he figured out something to do. |
