Despite being born second in line for the throne, Colletia knew she was destined to be Queen. It was a title her mother had never taken for herself, preferring to rule with a gentle claw as matriarch. At least, gentle until it came to her paranoia-driven insistence on moving the clan into hiding. As a measure of necessity, soft and kind Nymphaea had hardened and withdrawn, leading her clan ever deeper into the dark shadow of the Behemoth. It was that kind of resolve and authority that Colletia, then a teenager, had admired and coveted. As she grew older, Colletia withdrew, as well. Of course she loved her family, her parents had raised her with love and she had always been close with her brother, but she had more important matters to attend to. She spent hours tucked away in her nest, practicing a more regal manner of carrying herself and repeating planned speeches by the dim light of the sun filtered through the amber walls. Neglecting her relationships and her health, Colletia grew into an odd dragon, frail and lonely but with a haunting air of nobility in a clan that had no real noble class. Alone in her nest and dizzy from lack of food and rest, Colletia couldn't help but miss her old life, playing with her brother, stealing extra portions from the insect stores and laughing together. She knew he didn't want to lead the clan, he had always been as desperate to avoid his responsibilities as she was to take them over. There wasn't anything to be done about it, she had chosen her path. Going back now would be pathetic. Choking back tears, Colletia once more recited a speech no one would hear. A queen mustn't cry. She had to be strong. There wasn't anything else left for her to do. |
