So it was for Draugr, who had learned what it meant to be born twice. He did not remember the first, only perhaps a flash of darkness here and there torn from his memories. The second had been far different. He did not remember the inbetween of Death and Life, only shadows at best. However, he remembered the violence of being ripped thread by torturous thread into the light. His blindness had burned as it melted, he remembered screams. He did not remember if they were real, or even if they were his own. He remembered stumbling, fracturing the bones in his body with every step, what was left unnatural and unholy. He remembered the feeling of arms around him, the hushed tones soothing his ears as he was shattered into Being again. He could not say if what came after was life or death, only that he believed it was life for the purest fact he could remember it.

He did not dream, or sleep really, only spent hours with his eyes closed remembering. Draugr remembered a heart that had once simply stopped remembering how to beat faster when he was near the one who chose him. They had chosen him to resurrect and why choose him except because he was special? He remembered so little of his first life.

Perhaps they had loved one another. But surely if they had, they would say something? Perhaps they did not want to rush Draugr. Draugr’s thoughts spiraled as his heart restarted again, remembering he could have feelings like this. Confusion. Hatred. Happiness. Agony.

Love. He did not understand why he loved the one who had cursed him. He could not understand why he hated the one who blessed him. He could not understand the emotions that sewed themselves into knots, again and again around his heart, a tangled web he could not worry the end of, not now when he felt love so strongly he could fall apart at any moment.

He could fall apart, he did fall apart, he would always fall apart for them.
