"I am the spirit-caller. That is what I am, and what I practice. Do you think all the spirits of dragonkind are born in this world? Do you think your soul is native to Sornieth? I say that it is not. I can see it in you. I can always see. If you are content in the ignorance of your current life, then live, and be ignorant. But if you are restless - if you dream, if you wake in the night with the traces of voices you have never heard calling a name that is not yours - if you are restless, I will call to the spirit in you, and I will make it remember.

"The calling is a delicate thing. Some spirits come to Sornieth and wait in the bodies of dragons they are not meant for. There is no guarantee that the spirit I call to belongs to you, you know. It is equally likely that it is holding onto you, waiting, waiting for one of your hatchlings. But it could be yours. Yes, it could be. That spirit I see, looking out of your eyes. Have you never wondered at the things you dream of? ...Yes, I can see that you have. Well, no matter. The spirit must sometimes be coaxed, wooed, before it arises. Whose do think was the first spirit I called to? Can you guess? ...No? It was my own."

"In its last life, my spirit belonged to a sleek hunter-creature, four-legged, and spotted like the jaguar-gene. Its element was more like Shadow than the Nature I bear now. For years I lived with the memory and thoughts and instincts of that creature stirring in me, every day, whenever I looked into my reflection I saw conflict. An imperfect image. Then I came to this clan. I spoke with the matriarch, and together we changed me. I took on the spotted jaguar-marks. I took on the runes that gave me the accents of gold I knew in another life. And then when I came to the mirror, I recognised the spirit in me for the first time, and I remembered, and I was alive again.

"There is nothing quite like the feeling. There is a burden, in being so called, in the perfect memory. I am displaced, torn away from what I once knew, a soul adrift in a foreign land - but I am myself. I will endure. And I will bring the gift of self-knowledge to any brave enough to reach for it. I am the spirit-caller, and this is what I do."

"More than a dozen dragons within this clan have had their spirits successfully called to them, or to their offspring. Some are still waiting. Many live here now, among other wanderers looking for their place. You may speak with them, if you wish. I will never regret my calling, but you might. You have to make the decision. Go! Go, and speak with them. Hear what they have to say. Look into the mirror, and ask your reflection if it desires more. Ask yourself if you can bear to live the rest of your life wondering what you might become. Then once you have decided, come back. Or don't. That choice is yours to make."
