When he was young, Hirael was exalted to the Lightweaver. Accompanied by several other young exaltees and an escort, he was sent to train and, eventually, fight in the dominance war. Before the group ever reached their first stopping point, they stumbled directly into a particularly intense battle. Hirael, especially empathetic, even for a skydancer, found he could feel all the pain, rage, and fear of the fighting dragons. He fled the battlefield, but the damage was done. He never fully recovered from the trauma of the incident. His party was never able to find him.

He wandered across the border, into shadow territory, where he roamed and lived off any plant life he could find. He ended up hungry, dehydrated, and exhausted not far from the lair of a small, newly formed clan. One of the progenitors, Marna, found him whist gathering and brought him home for rest, water, and nutrition.

Since then, he has remained here. Hirael has sworn off all violence, and is one of the most skilled healers in the area. While most skydancers eat plants as well as insects, he is strictly vegetarian.
