Biography

Sometimes, the crimes of the parents are so great that even the hatchling cannot be trusted. At least, this is what Vega’s home seemed to believe. His first few weeks in the Starfall Isles were happy and sweet, but they quickly turned sour as his birth clan exiled him. They would not speak at him, and only the bravest dared look him in the eye, young as he was. His sentence for crimes unspoken was to wander Sornieth, receiving no aid from any member of his home clan under severe penalty. Old enough to understand that he was no longer welcome, though young enough to be utterly terrified of being alone in the world, he set out by himself, carrying nothing but his pearl in his claws. At first, he would not take help even from those meaning well; he assumed his clan could see around every corner and would descend on him in fury if he did so. Besides, he resolved to be self-sufficient and stronger, to prove that their judgment did not weaken him.

But he became lonely after a time, and though his magic helped him survive, he wanted to learn more. Vega sought a mentor and found one in the magician named Marvel. Marvel worked him hard, and the constant company was a struggle to grow accustomed to again, but Vega was tireless and ready to learn, not to mention born with an innate gift for Arcane magic that made him something of a demigod. Though his skills were difficult to control (and to this day, they still elude him when his emotions run too high), he soon rivaled his mentor in power, at which point Marvel began to invite him on house calls and other ventures into the world.

It was a house call that cost Vega his sight.

Marvel’s talents were requested by a Fae whose mate was deathly ill. He wanted nothing more than to save her, and Marvel agreed. His price, though, would be the hand of the Fae’s daughter in marriage. Vega warred silently with himself. Was it right to demand such a thing? Was it too far out of line? He made up his mind, though, and when Marvel demanded he track down the daughter, who had fled upon learning of the deal, he refused. For this, Marvel stripped him of his sight and left him for dead.

Traveling was much harder without an inkling of what the world around him looked like, but Vega still had his magic, honed sharp under Marvel’s tutelage. He wandered for weeks until meeting a fellow Pearlcatcher named Vienna, and to his surprise, he learned that it was she who had fled from marriage to Marvel. Brought together by a common enemy, they began traveling together, only for Vega to fall in love with Vienna’s sweet and generous temperament, while she came to adore his stubborn, resilient nature. Together, they run a small potion shop and live in blissful peace. Vega does fear, however, that one day, his former master may come upon their home and eke them out for who they really are.
