When Verity first crawled out of her egg, she found herself alone on the Windswept Plateau. Well, almost alone. Next to the remnants of her shell, she noticed a tiny mouse that had made a nest within the nest that she hatched out of. Upon seeing her move, the mouse squeaked with fear and ran behind the bamboo on the edges of the nest. Verity blinked. Some part of her instinct told her that the mouse would make a very good first meal, and yet there was something else... something within her that desired the companionship more than a slightly satiated belly. After all, her mother and father were nowhere to be seen. And something was driving her to take on a charge. So instead of pouncing on the little creature, she flopped over onto her side and tried to seem non-threatening to the mouse.

After a few moments of silent staring, the mouse crept forward. The winds were strong here, after all, and it was cold, and here was a dragon radiating heat. And while the dragon clearly knew that the mouse was there, it had not tried to eat her. So she squeaked a timid, "Hello?" and sat on her haunches a foot away from the dragon.

"Hello, small friend! I don't seem to have any family, so I would be happy to share this nest with you if you need somewhere to stay."

The mouse nodded quickly, and scurried over to sleep under the lifted wing that Verity offered.

"Don't worry little one. I will keep you safe."
