Magically skilled | Repentant | Serious

Sidereus was hatched into the Clan of the Lost Woods, an allied clan of the Lair of the Lost and Searching.

From almost the time of his hatching Sidereus was drawn to the light, even sporting a small light of his own. Though he could not see the stars at night from his home he heard of them in stories and tales and was completely, utterly fascinated by the idea of a vast universe of shimmering lights amongst the darkness. As a hatchling he would wander and flit amongst the glowing plants tended by Doberge, imagining he was flying surrounded by the stars. He dreamed stars every moment of every day. As is the way of Nocturnes he spent much of his time mimicking others and it soon became clear that he spent most of his time mimicking - and learning from - the more magical members of the lair.

As Sidereus grew so too did his magical abilities. Initially, his kin encouraged his experiments with magic - he was clearly gifted, skills far exceeding normal for his age. As time passed, though, his mentors began to worry. Sidereus had been a calm, responsible, thoughtful (if somewhat serious) creature since he hatched. But as his magical abilities grew so did his obsession with luminescence and radiance, fueled by his passion for the celestial. He wanted to bring the beauty and energy of the heavens down to the land. He wanted to create perfect, working miniature galaxies and systems that could be hung in forests and caves and wherever else for all of dragonkind to enjoy, and he fancied they could also be used as power sources. He lost sight of all else. Any attempt to distract him was met first with irritation, then with anger, and finally all-out rage as his obsession grew. He began holing himself up more and more in a cave he fashioned for his work, rarely venturing outside. He stopped sleeping. He forgot to eat. The magic consumed him; ruled him. He listened to no-one. The others could see only two outcomes for him - first, that his obsession would claim his life, and second that one day an experiment would go wrong in such a way that, for better or worse, his life would be changed forever. As it happens, it was the latter.

During an attempt to create a true miniature star - to take all the energy and power and intense combustion of the real thing and reduce it to an infinitesimally smaller object - the manic but exhausted, half-starved Nocturne miscalculated. The shockwaves of his failed experiment shook the lair, but they were all but forgotten when his clanmates saw what had happened to Sidereus himself. His cave was a shattered pile of rocks in complete ruins, as were half the gardens surround it - and standing in the middle was a terrifying behemoth of a dragon, and he was in a rage. As well as growing spectacularly in size Sidereus seemed to have lost all reason and began crashing through the lair, moving ever upwards. He could not be reasoned with and no-one could stop him, though they tried their hardest. Their only choice was to run. Sidereus's rampage finally reached open air, and as he raged out into the night and caught sight of the night sky above him he slowly - ever so slowly - began to calm until he eventually passed out. With wonder, the few clanmates that had followed him watched as he shrank back down to his usual size. One of his clanmates fought their fear to remain with him, albeit at a small distance, until he came to.

At first, the small dragon was simply confused and sore. He did not know how he had come to be up above ground. Nothing was familiar, and he was sore and he was starving. But as he turned to pick himself up off the ground he saw his clanmate in the distance, eyes wide with fear and ready to run if she had to, and everything came flooding back to him.

Sidereus was mortified.

Even worse - he knew something had changed that he feared could never be undone. He felt it, deep in his bones - the magic, the madness, the rage. Even thinking about what he had done his claws began to grow in size again, then his hands, then his arms... desperately he began to breathe, to try and think of anything else, to run - and as he turned to flee he again saw the stars, and felt them help him find his thoughts again. In that moment, he knew he could never again return to his old home in the darkness. Those around him would never be safe. Devastated, exhausted, terrified, broken-hearted and repentant he turned to his clanmate and stuttered every apology he could muster. He poured out every thank you he could think of for his clan for putting up with him for so long. Finally, he sobbed a single goodbye, and faster than his kin could follow, he fled in shame.

Sidereus did not know where to go, and though he knew he was a time bomb he also knew he could not do this - try to fix the mess he'd made of himself - alone. That was how he'd gotten into this mess in the first place. But where could he go? For several horrible days he wandered the Tangled Wood, despondent, using the stars to calm himself and trying to sleep during the day to stop himself from growing into his raging behemoth self when the gentle stars weren't there to calm him. One evening, as he lay on the ground, shaking, after shrinking down from another episode, he had an idea. There was a lair in the heart of the Starfall Isles, up at the Observatory, the closest to the stars that he could get - a lair that was not only allied with his clan of hatching, but also dedicated to helping those dragons who needed safety and direction. Desperate to find his peace and make up for what he had done, he set out to find the lair and do just that.

When Sidereus first arrived he refused to step within the actual lair grounds lest he expand into a rage and hurt those from whom he sought help. He spent his first months in a makeshift home in a crystalline cave far enough from the lair to keep its occupants safe, but close enough that a dragon was always with him - usually Bonita, who helped him to control his magic; Virgil, whose knowledge of the stars is unparalleled; Aude, who made it her mission to help him (as she does all who suffer), or Anubis, who took a shine to the tortured youth.

As the months passed his episodes became less and less frequent and he became more and more able to predict them, to hold them off until he could get far enough away from anything or anyone vulnerable. He finally relented to Aude's wishes and moved into the lair proper, but only when she offered the perfect place - a repurposed greenhouse in the gardens, far enough away from everyone for him to be comfortable but close enough to be part of the clan, where he can always see the stars. (Aude even stuck some glowing stars in one corner of the roof for good measure.)

Sidereus helps Virgil and Sappho with their astronomy and Bonita with magic academia. He also spends time with Aerperla and Morolacuna in the gardens, finding the glowing plants calming during the day and taking care of sensitive seedlings in his greenhouse. Funnily enough, though, he has found more peace with Volucer and Anubis who have little to do with the stars but who took a real shine to the troubled young Nocturne and his attempts to overcome his streak of madness within.
