Biography

The aurora lights lit up the night sky over the polar icecap.

Those with the gift of second sight sought to glean portents from the shifting lights.

And, deep in the nesting grounds, a pearlcatcher egg cracked...

Raver's memory-pearl swam with strange light, as if a mirror inside were reflecting the night sky above. His pearl held more than the hatchling's own short memories. His head swam with a confusing torrent of thoughts that were not his own, his mind straining to contain more than himself. His pearl cracked, light and noise spilling from it. Raver raved.

Raver's clan wasn't sure what to do with the hatchling. It was obvious that he had the second sight. It was obvious that his ravings held mysterious truths. And it was obvious that he was driven mad from the overload.

What was not so obvious was whether Raver would survive.

The seers divined that Raver should be taken to the Sundial Terrace. The hatchling was summarily bundled up, damaged pearl and all, and carried away from the aurora lights of his birthplace. And it was in the Sundial Terrace that he found order, tranquility, and, if not sanity, at least a home.
