The circumstances surrounding Sarah's admission to the Coven are mysterious at best. She appeared at Wynn's doorstep one night amid torrential rain, her body wracked by grief and defeat. She slept for many days inside the coatl's den, and when she did finally emerge she avoided the other members of the clan, instead busying herself with manual labor.Wynn did not acknowledge the strangeness of this sudden appearance. She acted as though the pearlcatcher had been there all along, quietly helping with the construction of the upper village. The clan took her lead, and Sarah entered the folds of their everyday lives with only the slightest of hesitations. If anyone noticed the way she clutched at the pendent around her neck, or the slight limp when she walked, or the time that Wynn spent etching new sigils into the Titan Stones, they certainly didn't mention it.

Over time she loosened up, occasionally cracking a smile and, even more rarely, telling a story of one of her many adventures. Sarah, it came to be known, had been a nomad, travelling from place to place in the way that is common for wind dragons. She spoke of the powerful tornado she had found herself at the heart of when flying through the Windsong, and the night she spent sleeping in a tunnel beneath the Hewn City. She recounted violent encounters and warm nights spent huddled around a campfire with a troupe of snappers. Her eyes suggested amusement, but her whiskers betrayed sorrow. Something bit at the edges of her stories, like it bit at the arm and leg that limped, and at the chain that hung around her neck.

Leelah noticed. She didn't say anything, but she noticed. She smiled and laid her head on Sarah's shoulder when her eyes went dark, and at night she hummed peacefully when Sarah became too stiff to possibly be asleep. She sculpted and painted and sang for Sarah, pushing the darkness as far as she could. Sarah loved her for it. If only she could banish the shadow that had settled around Leelah.
