There had once been a fire in the Garden. The Flame Quarter was close by, but the magic that kept most of Rekhanci running so too was in place to ensure that the overwhelming heat and magma that the Flame Quarter produced would never trouble the rest of the city. Yet, once, that magic had failed. Leafstorm remembered it well, when the flames spit up at the sky in great heaves and the smoke clouded dense within the magical barrier, so much so that it had to be briefly dropped. The magic kept the bitter cold that naturally permeated the Icefields away, for it was always a neutral temperature within Rekhanci. For the first time in decades, however, snow fell on the stone streets. Although it helped clear the air, it did little to stop the flames. Like an awful tidal wave, the fire taking street after street until, much to everyones dismay, it breached the confines of the Flame Quarter and began to creep its way along the Artisinal Quarter. Dragons had been flying every which way, and seemingly every single dragon with magic equipped to help sought to stop the spread of the flames. Even Leafstorm, who was Wind and could suck the air out of a space, did his best to keep the encroaching flames away from his beloved Garden. Still it took it. In moments, the lovely plants and trees had been devoured. The Garden of Summers had been burned black, fuel for the roaring furnace that was overtaking the south of the city. Even when the city had managed to conquer the fire, even when it was all put out and reparations began almost immediately, Leafstorm had only felt thick grief for all that they had lost. Another dragon might have relished the challenge of repairing a beautiful Garden, of building it from the ground up. Yet Leafstorm had always struggled with his love of herbology and the reality of his Wind-based magic. He could coax air onto his creations, but he would never have the natural ease of the task that came with being a Nature dragon. Attempting to slowly and painstakingly fix the Garden of Summers was not the first time Leafstorm had wished his eyes had been a different shade of green. In this, he was grateful for Melia’s constant presence. The guardian whose Charge had been the Garden of Summers since she’d first stepped foot into Rekhanci took the blow in stride. Her willpower never faltered, never slowed. She had slaved over the Garden for years, and with it all burnt to a crisp, she slaved over it some more. It was all Leafstorm could do to watch her diligence, her grand efforts, and muster up the energy to do the same. Their work had been painful and grueling. When the life-supporting parts of the city had been rebuilt after the fire, some Kazirin were then allowed the task of helping rebuild the Garden of Summers. It had been easier, then, with Nature dragons helping to renourish the soil and willing stubborn seeds to take. There had been a period where the Garden of Summers was made entirely of nursery plants, small and hopeful buds and sprouts tenderly testing the air. The Garden was a sea of brown soil speckled here and there with sprigs of optimistic trees and new grass. Leafstorm had felt hope and relief pool in his gut, and a deep primal kinship with the Garden in this timid state. He felt a new understanding, both with gardening and with himself. Given time, it would grow. They were dragons. Their lives spanned generations. The Garden would become what it once was in time, and Leafstorm would have the pleasure of witnessing its entire life. Every plant, every tree and flower. They had known his hands, his magic. This, really, was the beauty of herbology. | blankblank |
