Biography

“Just over that ridge, Claudius, I bet that’s where we’ll find our next adventure!”

The massive golden griffin cocked an eye at the small orange fae that fluttered by his left forepaw. ”Crraaaak?” it queried in a crackling voice as it shifted to allow the fae to climb up to its shoulder.

“I bet there’ll be food aplenty, and gold as far as the eye can see! I’ve heard tales about this area, and I’m sure at least some of them are true, or my name isn’t Wyndham. And if nothing else, we’ll have a great story to tell back home. I mean, just look at this place!” Wyndham stood on his hind legs and stretched his front claws as if grasping at the fluffy white clouds above. “It’s so beautiful here. Big blue sky, clover forever, I could just fly around here for ages.”

At that, Claudius shook himself, either to settle his fur or to indicate dissent. He eyed his companion with a wary eye, then flicked his tail at the ridge before them. Wyndham followed his lead and studied the steep rolling hills, covered in grass and clover, and dotted with small blue wildflowers.

“That height’s no problem for us, Claudius. Don’t be such a worrywart! We both have wings, don’t we? Come on, I’ll race you to the river!” At that, Wyndham leaped into the air from his familiar’s back and with sweeping strokes, carved his way into the air and away. Claudius paused for a moment, listening- sure enough, he could hear the burbling of a body of water somewhere nearby. With a long-suffering huff, he clambered to his feet and lifted into the air after his small friend.

As Claudius was ruminating on the odd ways of his erstwhile friend and meandering lazily through the sky after the small fae, a sharp cry of pain and confusion rent the air and was quickly swallowed by the sound of racing water. Claudius shrieked a quick reply, and drove his wings through the air, his earlier somnolence forgotten with fear for his companion. He came upon the wide, rolling river he had heard before, casting his eyes back and forth across the water, searching for any sign of his fiery friend.

“Ey, Tenmei, lookit this strange fish splashing about in the water o’er here!” Claudius whipped his head about in search of the speaker, and saw two massive Imperials resting in the shade of a cypress on the far bank.

“Oi, Taiyou, you better grab it before it slips away! It looks like a wily one!” the other Imperial replied to the first, lightly slapping his rump to get him moving. The female, Tenmei, glanced over at the drowning Fae before catching sight of Claudius hovering uncertainly in the air. “Ey, griffin friend! Get your own catch- we saw this one first!” She gestured to the fae, clearly thinking him some form of fish.

Claudius was about to screech a sarcastic reply when he heard the male Imperial call, “Tenmei! This is no fish! You better get over here! Quick!”

Claudius wheeled in the air and dove towards the bank, ignoring the protests of the female Imperial. With a rush of wings and a heavy thump, he landed near where Taiyou had laid Wyndham out, apparently realising after fishing him out that he wasn’t a fish, after all. ”Kreeeeaww!” Claudius screeched in Taiyou’s face, ignoring the vast difference in size in favor of protecting his small companion. To his surprise, Taiyou laughed and held his front paws in the air.

“I mean no harm to you and yours, friend griffin. I thought he was a fish, splashin’ about in the river like that! I didn’t realise he was a Fae. I’m not about to eat him now, though, don’t you worry.”

A coughing sound from behind Claudius distracted them both, as Wyndham roused and shook himself. “I’m alright, Claudius, I just got too close to the river and got swept in! I sure am lucky these two were here, huh?” Wyndham coughed again, then turned to the curious Imperials. “If you’ll pardon our first meeting, my name is Wyndham, and this here is Claudius. Do you live around here? We’re looking for a clan to spend some time with in these parts, if you’ll take us.”

Tenmei laughed from her spot under the cypress tree. “O’course you can come stay with us, ya little fish! We welcome all travelers, whether they be dragon, griffin, or-” she paused and snorted, “Or wee minnow!”
