MATHRA

Many years ago, Mathra lived among another clan. She had a large family, with doting parents who cared for her more than anything. The clan was small and tight-knit, and she was happy there.

The clan was close to the Hewn City and occasionally sent a group of scavengers, which included Mathra's father, to search for artifacts in the area. After one journey out, the group didn't return. Mathra mourned her father and friends, along with the rest of the clan.

A month later, the scavengers returned. They were not the dragons the clan remembered - now, they had wild eyes and darkness dripping from every crack. There was little the peaceful clan could do to defend themselves against the Shade-infected dragons when they attacked. Mathra's mother laid over her daughter to shield her from the attackers claws.

Unable to pull her small body out from beneath her mother's corpse, Mathra began to starve and, surrounded by the Shade, she slowly began to change.

Although she lacked strength, her body seemed to fight back on its own when she was carried to Grazia's grounds and imprisoned. Many wished to see Mathra dead, but Tahla fought with all she had for a chance to try and save the young Imperial. She was given her chance, with the understanding that she would face dire consequences should her attempts fail to succeed. Luckily for the mage, she and her partner managed to free Mathra from the Shade's clutches. To this day, she still holds Tahla in great regard.

Once recovered, Mathra was escorted to stand in front of the clan's leaders. They sought information on the Shade. Mathra told them all she could until she couldn't bear to continue. She begged Sangria and Daegan to let her help in eliminating the thing that had destroyed her clan, her old happiness overtaken by anger.

Mathra trained hard to improve her combat and eventually became one of Grazia's most powerful members. She is now the founder and leader of the Golden Guard, a group of the most talented, loyal and strong-willed fighters willing to do whatever it may take to keep Grazia and the surrounding land free of the Shade's touch. New members are hand-picked and personally trained by Mathra herself. Being asked to join the Golden Guard is considered a great honour, granting status, riches and respect, and only a fool would refuse.

Although they present a stoic front, the Guard consider one another family.

Mathra still suffers nightmares about the events of her childhood.
