Biography

OCTAGON
sentient rock
Roommate: Aokh

Out of all the things Clan Lamprey has uncovered in the Hewn City over the years, Octagon is probably the most astonishing. An ancient creation from an era and culture unknown, carved from dark rock and accented with luminous purple crystals; it was activated by an accidental touch from Anjut, who had accompanied the expedition. It promptly sucked enough magic out of him that he passed out on the spot. Frightened by its alarming appearance, the other expedition members chased it off, but they soon found it trailing them from a distance on their way back to the clan. No one has been able to get rid of it since; it absorbs magic as a power source, which can make it very difficult to destroy, since it can fix itself as long as there is enough raw mana in the area.

Thankfully, it is a peaceful monster, and after the initial panic of having an enormous self-regenerating rock thing lurking around the clan lair subsided, it was discovered that Octagon is eager to please and very interested in helping out whenever there is something to be done. Its "programming" seems to render it completely incapable of intentionally harming a living creature, to the point where it cannot even fight back when attacked. Most of the clan is still wary around it, but even the most paranoid will hesitantly agree that it is helpful to have around sometimes.

Despite Octagon's willingness to submit to testing, the way it is designed has proven to be too alien for local researchers to understand. Having given up for the moment, they instead spend most of their "study time" with the machine teaching it how to read and speak common Draconic. It has shown a great aptitude for learning and has even chosen a name - as unconventional as the name may be. Aokh hopes that Octagon will eventually be able to give them a firsthand account of its ancient home's history, its languages, and its culture.
