Apart from the inhabitants of the aviary and the clan members' familiars, the Abode also keeps an assortment of other creatures, from the fiercest of wolves to the most mischievous of ferrets. And it is Emiru's role to tend to these beasts; with his remarkable ability to bond with the animals, he finds that conversation flows much easier with them and seems more at ease around them than his dragon clanmates. When separated from his animal companions, he tends to be very timid and his speech characterized by an ever-present stutter.

He also has a well-known fondness for rabbits. Against frequent orders not to bring the creatures to the sleeping quarters, he commonly smuggles them in beneath his scarf, invoking many complaints of soiled and shredded bedding the next morning.
