Birthday Hatchling, hatched by me!!

storage for old lore

Glasstides leader. If you want the truth, seek Mizuno.

It's not so hard being a leader after all.
Everyone is happy, and that's what matters.

*****

On the shore of the Tangled Wood, a little Coatl hatchling was chasing the shine of sea spray when he lost his footing and plunged into the sea. His shiny, gem-like body glittered in the eye of a mighty Imperial as she fled her own homeland. The giant, riding a gust in an attempt to escape an unknown pursuer, pivoted and dove straight for the drowning creature. She caught him and kept descending, down and down, until they hit the bottom of the bay with great force.

Sand and debris scattered. The Imperial, bloodied from a lost battle, settled her long body around the hatchling. She had barely enough strength to wind a bubble of pressurized air around them. The two laid there for a day and night, each too exhausted to speak to the other. As the sun rose on the second day, it woke the Imperial and she stirred for the first time.

"Are you awake, little sparkling one?"

"M-mn..."

"It's alright, you have me now. And I have you." She looked around at the abyss, not a fish or dragon in sight. A petite crab crawled into her bubble and she swiftly stabbed through it with a single claw. "You eat this, right? Here."

"Mm!" He grabbed the creature, ripping its legs and consuming the flesh inside. The Imperial eyes became gentle crests. She had never thought about raising young ones. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. At least, if they're all as shiny and bright-eyed as the baby she had rescued.

"Have a name, little friend?" He shook his head, unsure of the purpose of her question. "Then we'll give you one when we find it. Together." This time, he nodded.

"Stay silent, little one. There's a Wildclaw over there, and they are very dangerous. We'll have to hide until he passes, unfortunate for us." She pushed the Coatl behind her coiled body. The air was becoming thick with humidity as a volcanic vent spewed toxic gas further back in the cave. They would need a fresh wind soon, or they'd risk drowning. She began struggling for breath, the fear churning what little sense she had away. The hatchling began crying; the tears fell into the air and became steam.

There wasn't any choice. The poor baby couldn't breathe, the Imperial knew he hadn't much longer. She spun a breeze, hoping the Wildclaw outside would not see the bubbles rising from the cave.
