Skim Milk (so named because because of her intolerance [but absolute love for] to undiluted lactose products) was a happy, carefree nurse for her Arcane-flight nest. When one of the hatchlings was taken up by a roc, she took the blame: and the penalty. Skim Milk was expelled from the clan. She tried to find work elsewhere: applied herself on billboards, vagabonds' wings, on sidewalks in chalk. But all of the other lairs either already had a nursemaid or didn't need one.

It was Scarlet who discovered her first: she was lying, curled up, on a walkway, drawing hatchlings on the sidewalk in the last of her chalks. Scarlet, who had been taking a trip to the Arcane scholars, deduced that she should come with him, to Frysta's clan. Skim Milk instantly queried whether they have hatchlings or not -- "on a regular basis" Scarlet replied. "And I know someone who would like to make some hatchlings, possibly, with you." He led her home, where she met Moo -- the love of her life.
