ANKOU
DEATH
"Ankou is a personification of death in Breton mythology." A fearful Spirit that takes the shape of a dark Skydancer, wandering Istas at night, looking for souls to claim. Most drakes have nicknamed him "The Reaper," but the wiser and older ones know his true name and power... "The Ankou is the henchman of Death, and he is also known as the graveyard watcher; they say that he protects the graveyard and the souls around it for some unknown reason and he collects the lost souls on his land. The last dead of the year, in each parish, becomes the Ankou of his parish for all of the following year. When there has been, in a year, more deaths than usual, one says about the Ankou: – War ma fé, heman zo eun Anko drouk. ("On my faith, this one is a nasty Ankou.")" Ankou wanders the Tundra at night, searching for lost dragons buried under the snow and ice. Depending on their state, Ankou will either free the dragon and lead it to safety; or he will press his nose to the dying drake, freeing its soul and leading it to the other side. |
