Biography
Fear of Betrayal
MAD | DECEITFUL | RAVENOUS
An egg laid outside the territory of the eleven elemental gods will not hatch: without their magic, soul never knits to body and the embryo inside withers and dies. Without an anchor, the little waiting spark of Mind that might one day have become a person slips away through the cracks in reality. Most are eaten by the pneumavores that lurk in the hungry Void outside, but a few--lucky or clever or both--survive and grow up to become predators themselves. Shade-touched, these lost souls lurk in the dreams and nightmares of dragonkind, feeding on their fears and growing fat.
The largest of them are the greater horrors, dream-beasts without an identity beyond their Names--the specific terror they draw strength from. Most horrors are little more than beasts, unconscious and unaware of the minds around them, though they ably ape the manner and speech of dragons they meet while dreaming. The larger they are, the more they resemble thinking beings, though the veneer of intelligence lies only skin-deep over a terrible animal cunning. Sleeping dragons caught and seduced by a wandering horror might never wake again, trapped beyond saving in their own nightmares--or worse, awaken possessed, without dreams or mind or reasoning of their own.

Among greater horrors, power—the ubiquity of a horror's Name and the fear it feeds on—is measured in size. Horrors who feed on fears common to all thinking beings rapidly grow to monstrous sizes, gorged to bursting with the terror of Death, or Darkness, or Change. The Fear of Betrayal ranks high among the dreads that prey on mortal minds, and yet the horror bearing that Name on Sornieth takes a fae shape, hiding itself among the smallest of dragons. Unique among horrors, its dragon-seeming is nearly perfect, neither tooth or tentacle betraying its true nature.
It's all an act. As suits its Name, the Fear of Betrayal is an illusionist without peer. The tiny vulnerable fae is a mask for a beast that would rival an Emperor in size. Those so unfortunate to pierce the illusion—or worse, see it drop before them—rarely survive the encounter with the great ravenous thing wearing it. It is Betrayal's singular delight to seduce dragons into sleeping in its presence, then rend their vulnerable minds from them.
Though it must be conscious—otherwise it couldn't survive in the waking world—the Fear of Betrayal is so compulsive and thorough in its madness to seem almost thoughtless. It lies and deceives with the same unconscious facility with which it breathes, caring nothing for dragon or horror alike. Its only desire is to eat and grow larger—large enough, one day, to consume its parents and any other horror it might encounter, and become the sole object of fear in all of Sornieth...
