It is the nature of hatchlings to scare each other around a campfire, and the nature of parents to tell them to knock it off. They do so unusually firmly, though, when they tell their whelps not to speak of the Witch of the Wood.

You can see her only when the moon touches the river at 3am sharp, gathering herbs to brew her spells. She waits in the thorns to catch unsuspecting hatchlings, which she gives to her great bear to gobble up. Her wings are made of spiderweb, and her claws are made of witchcraft, and she wears the bones of the hatchlings that her familiar didn't quite finish...

Stop with these tales, say the adults. No good comes from superstition. Yet a hatchling with a discerning eye will see the way their parent then peers into the wood, and hope nothing peers back.

Is there really such a witch hiding in the Tangled Wood? More serious and skeptical sources insist they have indeed seen her, gathering herbs by moonlight. But who is she, really? And what is her place in the silence of the night?
