Biography
mate: Lazer
job: Weaver
Isis has found that things in Clan Dark-Blood have a way of coming full circle. Her mate, Lazer, dismisses it as logic; when a clan is as tight-knit as their own is, it's simply sensible to witness growth and realized goals. He doesn't mean to be rude. He only means to make sense out of the fantastic, to ground the unusual in reality. Isis hardly holds it against him.
She is not her mate, though. She is the soft, gentle compliment to his straightforward demeanor, and all of her life, she has seen too much coincidence to dismiss the notion of fate.
All things considered, and her own superstitions taken into account, Isis likes to believe that the circles of life twisting through Clan Dark-Blood are more than fate. They're nothing short of divine in her eyes, subtle manifestations of the Shadowbinder's power. The Lady of the Wood many not show herself to those living in her domain, but she is a trickster above all else, and tricks need not always be cruel. In fact, they can be pleasant, even joyful, so long as there remains enough surprise to constitute events as part of a trick.
Isis likes to use her profession as an example. As a child in the Court of Mist, she grew up surrounded by royalty on one side and peasantry on the other. Sometimes, the division was delightfully muddled, as the Court upheld titles and ranks largely out of disinterest for crafting new designations, rather than any true stratification. From that venue, Isis learned etiquette even as she learned discipline, trading lavish dinners for mornings spent working hard with her peers, cultivating new skills that might serve them well in the Court or beyond, should they choose to leave that life behind. That experience gave her total certainty she would never want to leave the Court behind.
And in some ways, she hasn't. Clan Dark-Blood is not the boisterous environment she grew up in, and it is perhaps more stratified, but it is not entirely unlike the Court of her childhood. Moreover, she is not doing anything she hasn't done before. Fate brought her to Clan Dark-Blood because her delicate talent was required. A simple circle, moving forward without ever truly ending everything.
Except that isn't the half of it. On her arrival in Clan Dark-Blood, having traveled at the request made for textile expertise, she found herself apprenticed to Nyx, the clan's weaver. The older nocturne much preferred to work on small tasks, like pillows and blankets, rather than tackling the grand tapestry work or expansive cloaks certain clients desired. To Nyx, Isis was an unexpected gift, talented enough to work unsupervised, but cordial enough to join in work as a team, and willing to learn new techniques with a humility that complemented her existing skills. They learned quickly to divide their time between solo projects and larger commissions, and Clan Dark-Blood's textile output grew at a healthy, steady pace.
As did Isis's love for Lazer. Unbeknownst to Isis at the beginning of their courtship, Lazer's previous mate had been the very same dragon who once passed all knowledge of her craft onto Nyx before she left to seek a fresh start in a new clan. It was Unity's departure that led to Nyx requiring an apprentice, and to Isis's subsequent hiring. And, of course, to her relationship with the Clan Dark-Blood technician.
Sometimes, the circle wobbles a little, or does not appear to be circular when the journey begins, but everything Isis has experienced in Clan Dark-Blood has led her to believe that there's a touch of magic in the air, the kind that sees all matters through to their fated ends. Or, better yet, to their destined new beginnings.
There are dragons who might be troubled by this nebulous, cyclical nature of things, but it brings Isis comfort at the end of the day. Fate is watching out for her beloved clan, even if it only intervenes in unobtrusive ways, and that gives her the confidence to go forward without fear. Already a spontaneous, loving sort from her early days, she's only grown more open with her affection, more certain in her choices. Her love for Lazer is without bounds, and the joy she takes in weaving is equally endless.
There will always be new skills to learn, new choices to confront, new challenges to face, but there will also always be Clan Dark-Blood and its mysterious ways, always turning back in on itself, protecting its own. It's a curious circle, and perhaps one day she can capture it in the loom, albeit in limited form. That would be a triumph of its own, one she suspects the Shadowbinder might approve of.
