ERUqhr3.png THE LOREKEEPERS
tumblr_inline_o21bm3kZFq1r3lvtf_400.png
For the longest time, The Lorekeepers were not respected within The Abandoned as a tribe or clan. Instead, their dwindling numbers and their focus on prose, legends, and history had them marked as a “club” by the cults and warbands that comprised the majority of the coalition. However, their knowledge of history and Sornieth history proved helpful in keeping them all in one piece, granting them a rather lofty status among the clans. They’re liked well enough by even the shiftiest of clans and delight in talking to even the most grotesque of its members. Some dragons theorize--if not for their charisma--some of the Abandoned wouldn’t know anything about one another at all.

MOJAVE
”I don’t know what to put here.”

Mojave wasn’t born into a complicated clan of high-flying dragons who fought monsters and came home with the heads of their enemies. Most of them barely knew how to sharpen their claws, let alone tussle with the neighboring Longneck tribes. No, Mojave came from a simple clan of Earth dragons who, in typical Earth Flight fashion, were far more invested in their ancestors, their history, and their god. Nobody was a great hero more than they just knew a lot about the great heroes that came before them, and Mojave knew more than most.

Ever since she could understand draconic tongue, she’s been obsessed with history and lore. The secrets of ancient beings and the pasts of important dragons are something of an obsession and, as soon as she could pick up a quill, she was furiously jotting down all of the anecdotes and stories she heard from her clanmates so she would never forget. Her collection of writings took several volumes, and soon evolved to include scholarly essays and speculative historical theories to fill in the gaps in her knowledge. Her parents were proud of her dedication, but soon grew tired of her leatherbound journals and stacks of parchment taking up the areas where everyone was trying to sleep.

They suggested she find someplace else to store them. To Mojave, this sounded like a wonderful excuse to pack her bags and move out of the lair to see what else Sornieth had to offer. After all, a worldly dragon is a knowledgeable dragon, and there’s bits and pieces of the lore of the land that lie beyond the boundaries of Dragonhome.

THE LOREKEEPERS AND THE ABANDONED
For years, she slummed it with whoever would take her in, bouncing from land to land and recording family histories and ancient legends alike. Nobody ever truly took an issue with her, save for the fact that she always cluttered up whatever section of the den she was given and, no matter how hard she tried, couldn’t keep her things in order. Her life was primarily nomadic, and she spent it hitched to a cart full of her work so that she wouldn’t have to leave it behind, which was hell on her back but amazing for her muscle tone.

While camping with a tribe in the Shifting Expanse, Mojave met Fracture, a massive warrior-poet Guardian who was on a long and strenuous trek home to her family. A talented storyteller and gifted author, Fracture immediately caught the eye of the younger Mojave as something of a role model, somebody she could aspire to be. Instead of staying with the tribe she was originally slated to live with, Mojave waited until Fracture parted ways with her gracious hosts and followed along, much to Fracture’s dismay. Though initially reluctant, she eventually warmed up to the coatl and took her under her wing.

This was the beginning of The Lorekeepers, as Fracture continued to attract dragons with more scholarly and literary interests. By the time they reached the land of Fracture’s family (back in Dragonhome, much to Mojave’s chagrin), they were a proper clan. Instead of merely merging with the clan of her birth, Clan Elsewhere, The Lorekeepers became yet another cog in the machine that was The Abandoned.

THE FLAUROS INCIDENT

Life with The Lorekeepers was ideal. It was here that Mojave honed her craft under the eyes of her scrutinizing matriarch and clanmates, and here that she met her then-husband, Sonoran. A beautiful Wildclaw who was a master at illumination and artistry, he fell for Mojave immediately after meeting her and eventually won her over with his honeyed words and beautiful gifts. They had children, and grandchildren, and life was wonderful.

Then Flauros came and messed it up, as you can tell by the title of this chapter.

Being a historian instead of a warrior, Mojave didn’t find herself drafted into the front lines by Snap, but the fact that The Lorekeepers only had one combat-trained dragon to their name did not inspire faith in their members. Mojave was one of the few who didn’t immediately flee as Flauros and her minions began to pick apart and destroy the surrounding clans, left behind by her friends and even her mate, who left a sad and sorry note in his wake about how he wasn’t man enough to stay loyal. Being one of these unfortunate few who stood their ground did not end well for Mojave, who found herself inundated with work from The Fifteen, from mages, from warriors, from everyone who was looking for some kind of answer as to what and why Flauros was.

Every night, fueled only by fumes and wine, she labored over her desk and tomes, contacted outside clans, sent out allies to bring back whatever shreds of information they could, and eventually was beaten to the punch by Grimoire, a Mirror who knew exactly what was going on and never bothered to tell anyone. He says it’s because he didn’t want to be blamed for Flauros, seeing as his father had a role in her creation, but Mojave isn’t sure if she believes that. Mojave’s pretty sure that Grimoire just didn’t give a damn and decided to stay out of things until it started involving his mate, Samhain, who was slated to be executed as a traitor after being hypnotized by a traitor into helping make an Emperor. An Emperor, Mojave might add, that crushed The Lorekeeper’s library, killed many of the remaining scholars, and left Mojave picking through the debris for what remained of her friends and her life’s work.
So, you know, good job guys. Thanks. Round of applause for everyone.

Mojave may still be bitter about all of this. She may also know that there is nobody to really blame, but the whole thing, in retrospect, was a completely preventable comedy of errors. And this is the only place she doesn’t have to be impartial, so let her underline this: None of this should have happened. Especially the part with the Emperor.

Flauros lost, by the way. Mojave’d write it more flowery than that, but she’s running out of ways to say that in more purple prose.

PERSONALITY
Mojave isn’t good at writing about herself. Mojave is probably not the best judge of her own personality, either.

But, I guess, if you wanted to know what I thought about myself, I’d say that I am an occasionally bitter, obsessive writer and historian who is basically like every other ill-tempered writer you know. I don’t even know if “ill tempered” is a good word to use, or if it’s just that I’m very good at saying what everyone else is thinking. I drink too much wine and I don’t sleep as often as I should, and I ask too many questions and am in too many other dragons’ businesses. I’m disorganized, disheveled, and I wish I could be as pretty as all those dragons in silks and gold.

But, I’m just some pudgy little dragon in a bandana. I don’t really look good in anything else.

I’m just trying to do my best. I’m one dragon doing my best to keep tabs on everything that’s going on in this sprawling confederation of clans because I think it’s important to know your history, for the sake of not repeating past mistakes and for the sake of understanding dragons you may otherwise needlessly hate or otherwise disregard.

I mean, how many of you would think Volrina or Coorhagen were evil if you didn’t know what they’d been through?

Fracture of Elsewhere, Master of Lore.

Mojave, I know you’ve been working on this for years and you’re exhausted,
but this isn’t the kind of tone we use in scholarly writing. You know that. If I
submit this to The Fifteen, they’ll gut us both.

With all due respect, I think this is exactly what The Fifteen need to read.
Especially the part about the goddamned Emperor.
