O WITCH MOTHER, O WITCH MOTHER
Seraphina, known only as Witch Mother among strangers, lives a life dedicated to knowledge --- and therefore power. Constantly she hangs on the precarious edge of consuming herself entirely, of letting her body fully succumb to the great magic she has cultivated in her exceedingly long life. And in an existence where such knowledge, such power, such magic has been cruelly withheld from her, there can be nothing more satisfying to her than the thrill of absolute control over her own body and her own surroundings. In the blink of an eye, she can turn to ash. But look, cruel Fate, look how she cheats you, despite the w r e t c h e d n e s s with which you had saddled her!...
One that started with a young hatchling abandoned and lied to by her father, after having witnessed the death of her mother at the hands of a strange clan of dragons corrupted by the shade. One that was cultivated when she was raised in solitary wilderness, solitary, save for the tutelage of a blind old dragon. She was taught powerful magic, at the price of being smothered by him, where he forced title of "daughter" upon her when she yet still yearned for the return of her real father. One that flared when it was made clear he would not return for his only baby girl, and this hatchling, now an adolescent of tremendous power, would level an entire forest in her rage --- ' YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER! ' she had howled. One, finally, that was sealed, when this blind tyrant locked her away for this denial of him, in a prison made only of celestial light and heat. Torture of the cruelest kind, where a hatchling died, and a monster was born. Escape from this torture would yield her with a freedom she has never known, and while she vows bitter and sadistic revenge against the dragon who imprisoned her, there are other more worthy causes keeping this ancient and ethereal soul tethered to the soil. The scientific pursuit of knowledge, of course, and hatchlings. Hatchlings of all ages, size, color follow their adopted mother to escape their own tortures, their own prisons --- and Seraphina, though awkward and often confused in the face of such affection, herds and loves these young dragons like her own children, unable to leave them to their sorrows. This is how she exists, and has existed for ages, a being forged of equal parts love and equal parts hate. Frigidly cold in her neutrality, but white hot in her wrath, she is an unpredictable marriage of extremes. None but her children can be certain of her humors, for only they are blessed with the love of a heart that had supposedly long gone sour and rotted within her ribcage. |
