'Of course Neldaima has a deepest wish, you foolish whelp. Every dragon does, but she wears hers so plainly that even I can see it.
'Hear me. Neldaima fled the Scarred Wasteland as soon as her legs were strong enough to claw her way out, but her hatch-clan's practice of infecting their young to cull the weakest of them left its mark. She cannot talk, she can barely move her wings for the severity of her gembond, she is blind and deaf on one side, and the pestilence that blackened her veins is clear on her skin.
'For all that, she is strong of mind, and her knowledge of illness comes from the depth of her familiarity with it. Our clan has never had a superior healer. Nonetheless, the others see her clouded eye and the bandages she binds over sores that will never close, and they fear her. They approach her only when they have need. The younglings howl when they are taken to her, though her touch is as gentle as their own parents' and she knows better than any other how to ease their pains.
'So yes. She has a deepest wish, since you are too thick to see it for yourself. She wants only to be loved, to receive a kind word from another. And to my disgust, I cannot be seen with her as I would never again be allowed close enough to anyone to learn their secrets, and that fact alone should bring shame upon our noble clan.'
